Can anyone explain this to me? I'm not sure if this is a setting I should have enabled. Any advice?

Let's say your base calories on here are 1400. That's what you start at every day. If you add exercise to your calculation, the site gives you more to eat in the amount of those "bonus" exercise calories.

So the calculation is Food Daily allotment minus Exercise = Net Calories. You could conceivably arrive at negative calories if you exercise too much and not eat enough.

    Or another way,

Food Daily allotment plus Exercise = that's what you want to eat.

    Is that what you mean?

Negative adjustments are for when you have an activity tracker and you aren't moving so much.

Say you're given 1600 calories to lose a pound a week. This means your maintenance calories are 2100. MFP reads your tracker when you sync it and estimates that you're only going to burn 1950 calories if you stay that inactive. If you eat the 1600 calories, your deficit will only be 350 calories instead of 500. To compensate, MFP will adjust your calories so you would need to eat 1450 to sustain your deficit.

Yes, and for those wondering where to change this setting, it is here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/diary_settings
