Is it acceptable to break up with a deaf person via text message? I know ending a relationship over the phone is a faux pas, but I feel as if this is an exception to the rule.
I've been dating this deaf guy for a few months now. Nothing serious, but he's starting to get a little too clingy for my liking. I let him know right up front I didn't want anything other than a casual relationship. Every time I remind him he needs to tone it down a notch, it only lasts for a short time.
I've learned enough sign language so we were able to communicate in person. But most of our communications were through text messages.
I tried screaming out the wrong name in bed. Nope. Forgot he couldn't hear me. I obviously can't call him to do it over the phone or voice mail. I'm afraid if I go over to his place he might sign a whole bunch of stuff that I won't understand. Maybe if I took a translator? It's hard to pick a fight because I'm so much better at being a **** if I don't have to try to get my point across in a different language.
Or am I doomed to be with him forever?

Break up in person. I would guess that he's really good at reading lip if ur face to face.
Edit: it takes two people to make a relationship work, only one to break up.0 -
Pretty sure there's a hallmark card for that, no?0

Make a gif of yourself signing "Let's break up." and send it to him.0

I would find a forum or group of deaf people somewhere online (maybe there's one on FB) and ask for advice. They would be the ones who could give you the best advice.
And as I understand it, a deaf person uses texting like a hearing person makes phone calls. I wouldn't break up via text. But I'm not deaf, so really, get a neutral deaf person's opinion.0 -

I don't know how to Skype, wheird. Maybe I should look into a Hallmark card? Or a signing telegram? Both sound like great ideas.0

I'd go round his place and do it in person. Can you remember that scene with Andrew Lincoln & Kira Knightley in Love Actually? - flip cards + black marker pen = hey presto! :laugh:0

My bf is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) and has been immersed in the deaf culture since birth. Although he is not deaf, most of his relatives are. His advice is that you have 2 options:
1) Video phone (skype, Z4, etc.)
2) Write a letter explaining your reasons and give it to him in person. Then he can write back instead of signing. (I still communicate with my bf's family this way sometimes)
It's always better to confront the person face to face because deaf people can't interpret tone of voice, only body language. If he sees that you're serious, he should understand your meaning. Similarly, if you would not break up with a hearing person via text message, it would not be fair to break up with a deaf person via text message. If your going to type to each other, be in the same room0
