Philosophical Saturday Morning

I'm 42. It's strange how, as you grow older, the age you think of when talking about being "old" just continues to get pushed out another couple of decades further. I don't feel old. At least, not in the sense that I am wise. I have a son who is nearly finished with high school and has already completed most of his associates degree. I've established myself as valued professional within my respective field. I'm in a great relationship with a brilliant woman who has very clever children of her own, and we recently combined households to form our own little Brady Bunch. Still, for the most part, I feel like a child who still has so much to learn. Perhaps that's a good thing. In my experience, those who insist they know it all often have a knack for demonstrating that they know very little. I'd rather navigate the moral landscape with caution and doubt, than go marching straight off a cliff with stubborn certainty.

There is one thing I do feel like I'm finally figuring out though, and that's how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It takes intellectual honesty and emotional maturity. I encourage everyone to follow any path that may lead them to success. For me personally, there is no pill, no surgery, no fad, nor any app that'll work, unless I begin with commitment and personal accountability. I have to want it, and not just because I know I "should" want it. Not because I think it'll fix my problems, or improve my self-esteem. Those are separate issues that need to be addressed on their own. No, I have to want it the same way I want a back rub or a day at the beach.... because it feels good to me.

All that aside, I love this app! I've linked it to my Fitbit account. Tracking my exercise and keeping a food diary that meets predetermined goals appeals to the kid in me by making it a game. Every day, my goal is to beat the game! So far, so good!

Well, time to get started on my daily routine. Hey, that's another thing worth mentioning. There's loads of evidence to suggest routine is good for a healthy mind and body. Find one that works for you, and stick to it! Good luck everyone!
