Hey! So I am a 24 year old female who is 5'9 and I weigh 160 lbs. When I go on the treadmill I walk at 10% at 3mph for an hour. Online calculators and equations all came out with similar results of 500ish calories, and when I input 0% incline then it says I burn closer to 200 calories. Can incline make that difference?

Also if I ate 1200 calories on the days I don't go on the treadmill and 1500 on the days I do will I lose weight? Thanks everyone!

As long as your burning more than your taking in you will loose weight.

Given your stats, why do you think you need to eat so few calories?

    ^^^ This

Incline makes a big difference (as long as you're not holding on while you're walking) Walking 3 miles at your weight and 0% incline would be more like 144 cals.

I am consuming between 1200-1350 cals a day and my preferred method of cardio is elliptic and treadmill. I am a much bigger guy at 5"11 and 224 (formerly 242) and I can tell you that I always feel full and somedays have to struggle to meet my cal goals. Using the treadmill is a good low impact way to burn cals your goal should be to burn more cals than you consume so you want to condition yourself to continually improve on your workouts. If you are at 3.0 mph and 10% you can start by varying your time and incline to build up your leg muscles and endurance. Next time try to see if you can get up to 3.5 mph @ 0% and once you feel comfortable at that level you can increase the incline. Or you can lower your mph to 2.5 mph and increase the incline to 15-20% this way you are always changing your approach and your body will not get used to your routine. Also see if you can increase your time gradually and increase the intensity of your workouts. You will see the results for sure.

Best of luck in your endeavors. Just remember Drive+Determination+Dedicaton= Success !!

You have got to be joking.

I'm 6ft1 and on 1500 cals could barely function.

I'm shorter and lighter and eat more while exercising 4 x a week to lose, so yes.

Yes, I'm 2" shorter, started at 250 and am down to 181 on 2000/day and run 3-4 days a week.

Treadmill tip: bring a towel and drape it over the clock display. I find when I want to run on it not seeing the timer helps.

Yes and yes. Incline walking does burn that many calories, and if you increase your calories when you do it you would still lose weight. You might even be able to get away with 1600-2000 calories on days you work out and still lose weight. (note if you do 2000 the loss will be slower)

I see posts like this and wonder, with no offense intended, how such people don't lose weight without trying (much less gain it in the first place) if they "struggle" to eat enough calories to still be at a large calorie deficit. What changed? Substantially changed nutritional profile of their diet? Gained weight due to a debilitating injury? Recovered from a binge eating/force feeding disorder?

Yes it burns more calories but only if you are not holding on to the rails ;)

Yes. Generally, the taller you are the more base calories you need. As a general rule of thumb that does not including fussing about and adjusting every once in awhile, I do this:
calculate your predicted maintenance calories at your goal weight using a reliable calculater (I like this one)
Subtract 250 calories, and eat that for the entire diet and your weight loss rate will adjust automatically in a healthy way.

Example: If your goal weight is 140, your predicted maintenance is about 1750 calories, so eat 1500 calories as a base plus a portion of your exercise calories. (that's about a 350 calorie deficit and you would lose a about pound every 10 days).

I'd generally conclude that they're not accurately measuring their calories in, or are burning so few calories out that the deficit isn't as high as they think it is.

In terms of my own experience, what caused weight gain was moving from a supervisory management job where I was on my feet and moving around all day, every day, to a more senior management job in a different type of operation, so I was much less physically active, but still ate a lot.

Military catering doesn't lend itself to small portions.

What's with the cheeky wink emoticon, is treadmill a new suggestive phrase? Should I be trying to flirt with women by offering them a go on my treadmill now?

It doesn't sound overly low to me if she is trying to lose weight, although I couldn't tell from the OP if that is the goal. I'm 5'9" and currently 164 lbs trying to lose 4 more lbs to reach my goal. My MFP number to lose 1 pound per week is 1,500 calories per day. And at that level I've been losing 0.6 to 0.8 per week.
