Wait...can I do this?

I recently discovered stronglifts and decided I would quit my barre class and join a gym and start SL in a couple of weeks. I've never lifted heavy, ever. Tonight I decided why not try my husband's dumbbells. Since SL starts at 45lbs. I decided I'd try lifting 2 20lb dumbbells. Well...that was harder that I expected and my lower back hurt afterwards! Now I'm wondering if I can even do SL.
Any words of encouragement?

You do not have to start at 45lb. Most gyms have a section with pre weighted barbells that you can use to start a program like this. Find a weight that you can complete the whole 5X5 with good form. You can do this!0

Do not start at 45 lbs.0

What lift did you do and are you sure that you weren't rounding your back during the movement? That could be the cause of your pain, improper form. Since 45 pounds is a relatively light weight.0

Oh I'm sure my form was wrong. Definitely.0

You should really look up some instructional videos. Or since you're going to a gym, tell them the program you're doing and that you're completely green to lifting and they should have someone that'll be able to teach you the lifts. Since strong lifts is comprised of major compound movements form is critical for the higher weights, they're incredible lifts for both strength and fitness. They just have to be done properly is all.

Start from the bottom, use the lightest weight to practice your form on, then when you feel you can, progress to using a little bit more weight.0
