Hello all,

I've been about two stone overweight for several years. I've been vegetarian most of my adult life, but not really has a good health balanced diet.

Over the last few years (for various different reasons) I've given up stuff that I considered to be a factor in my being overweight. First of all I gave up alcohol, having previously gotten into the habit of drinking a bottle of wine most nights. This was about four years ago. I did initially lose weight as a result, but it crept back up over time.

Then last November I decided to start following a plant based diet for ethical and environmental reasons. This meant giving up cheese (among other things) which I used to eat LOTS of. I assumed the weight would drop off - it didn't!

Then in January OH decided to do the dry January thing, I decided to give up another bad habit of mine, crisps. I was in the habit of eating a family bag of crisps most evenings. Again I thought making this change would see the weight drop - It didn't. I decided to make the crisp ban permanent as they're not really good for you at all.

All this made me wonder why despite having dropped these three things in particular I wasn't dropping any weight, so decided to do some calorie counting and started using MFP.

I've only been at it for a few days, amazing how quickly the totals tot up and it's already helped me make some changes. I usually have a cereal bar at around 10ish - decided to scrap that and have a pear instead today. Also have recognised that bread, rice and pasta are a problem for me, so looking at ways to reduce these such as adding cauliflower rice in to bulk up my portion and using courgette pasta etc.

Really love the thing at the end of the day when you complete the entry and it tells you how much you'd weigh in five weeks time if everyday was the same - found that really motivational.

So, that's me - hope all goes well, slightly obsessing over it at the moment but I'm sure that will settle down!

    Hi Saraa
Giving up what you really like doesn't help to lose weight if the calories are only replaced. I am on my 3rd round of watching/adding what I eat to MFP. Really excited I lost 5 ponds the first week and now living with disappointment that the rest of the weeks haven't been so fast. We didn't put the weight on overnight so I know it won't come off overnight. My restart was in Feb.

    Hey Saraa,
I gave up the bad foods that the large companies mass produce, anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup and gross things like that, no human should eat these things. I love beer, but it loves me more, so only 2 a week and always out at a pub, never buy it and bring it home. I do drink wine, I log it and account for it, I do not eat a lot of cheese at this point, although I could everyday! There have to be plenty of vegetarians on MFP that can help with recipes for you, people here are very kind and supportive.

Keep logging and make adjustments as you go and if can do some exercise, 70% of weight loss occurs in the kitchen the rest is exercise, don't give up!!

Feel free to add me as a friend, I log food and exercise daily.

    All the Best,
    David

sadness should have happened.......complete and utter sadness.

LOL! To be honest it's been fine. I was drinking far too much and decided that the risk to my health wasn't worth it, so gave it up. Same with the crisps rally.

As for cheese, that's not been bad either. I made the decision for ethical reasons, and unless you've tried baked almond feta you've never lived! Delicious!

And when I say nothing happened it's not strictly true. Although my weight has stayed static, I do feel healthier, have more energy and better mood.
