Hey so I hope someone can clear things up for me a bit . I went waaaayyyyy over maintenance on Easter and then I went on a deficit the day after and exercised and am continuing on a deficit this week . However , I am going to be in Boston on vacation starting tommorow and will be walking around a lot but I was wondering if it's possible after extremely overeating one day to go back to normal weight by just eating regularly like you did before you overate ? Like if I can't exercise as intensely but am still eating at a lose .5 lb deficit will I gain a pound from my day of overeating ?

Unless you ate 3500 over--no. You'll be fine.

You don't gain weight by over eating one day...your body doesn't work that way. The human body is very adept at altering various functions to accommodate for shortfalls and surpluses of energy and the human body strives for homeostasis. To override your body's ability to maintain requires consistently over-eating or under-eating...it doesn't happen in a friggin' day.

Yeah, but it will take you a lot longer to average out.

I've been pigging out at buffets once a week on top of my usual restaurant trips. I don't hold back. I pay for it. I enjoy it. That's my lifestyle.

But after an eating like that I just munch on celery sticks and cucumber, jicama, etc for the next 24 hours. I also feel like an overcharged car and I can do a lot of work! All the gained weight disappear after 2 days.

My wt loss is like on hyper drive at this point.

I took a 4 day roadtrip over springbreak, I didn't log my calories at all, in fact Mfp was the furthest thing from my mind. I had 4 days of breakfast buffets, one lunch buffet and ate various things in between. When I came home I was hungry and thought well since this is the last day of my vacation I'm hungry and I'm going to eat that big bag of ketchup chips. I weighed myself the morning of our trip and the morning after we came back. I was expecting a 2-3 lb increase of at the very least water weight, but I gained nothing. Totally wasn't expecting it, but it most likely has to do with how active I was. If you are walking around a lot and getting enough exercise you'll be fine and one day going way over won't hurt. Enjoy your trip

I log as accurately as I can, then just do a rough estimate in my head.

If I eat (say) 1500 calories over maintenance when I'm on a 500-calorie daily deficit (i.e., losing a pound a week), it will take me roughly 3 more days to re-lose any actual gain from that: (1500 / 500) = 3.

The actual gain would be approximately (1500 calories / 3500 calories in a pound) = a little less than half a pound. Anything I see on the scale above half a pound is likely water weight, and will drop off fast.

If I don't go far over very often, it's only a slight delay in reaching my ultimate goal.
