Swimming for weight loss

So my knees are destroyed and I'm not allowed any high intensity cardio / running etc. My physio advised me to do swimming. Luckily I have a pool, so I've decided I'm gonna swim to lose weight.

- Has anyone here lost weight through swimming?
- How long should I aim to swim for?
- Any tips ?
- Can I do anything else but just walking and swimming in the pool?

I'm really out of ideas and I'm finding it so boring...I do not last more than 30 mins.
