German Food

Going to a German restaurant for dinner tonight. The one we are going to has no nutrition menu so everything is "best guess". Is there anything I can specifically look for that would be lower calories?

I'd look at a cucumber salad, or even a small helping of potato salad (most are flavored with vinegars instead of mayo like in the US) and sauerkraut or red cabbage. Smoked fish like herring or trout would also be a decent option. Check for seasonal veggies as well... and most places will have some chicken or lighter options on the menu. Not all German food is made up of schnitzel covered in heavy sauce.
But in all reality, I would do some research online of what your favorite dishes are and their nutritional info and plan to just eat less of them - then you have some for another awesome meal (or two) the next day.0 -

Grilled chicken salad with lite dressing on the side. Have fun!0

Like quatermore said, grilled chicken salad is the healthiest.
See what soups they have, a broth based one won't be too bad.
Currywurst is a knackwurst (around 230 cals per link) with a curried ketchup on it. Pick sauerkraut, applesauce, side salad, cottage cheese, or German potato salad for sides.
you could also order a burger with no bun, or ask if they can do the trout without the butter.0 -
You could have the Berliner Currywurst with sauce on the side and cottage cheese and applesauce as sides. Maybe 600 calories?
Or yeah.... grilled chicken salad, don't eat the croutons, and light dressing.0 -
I am not sure what you calorie limitations are. I might consider the trout or the shrimp as well.0

Looking at needing to stay at or under about 600 today. I am willing to take a meal and split it out for lunch tomorrow though so that helps a lot.0

I should NOT have read that menu. I want schnitzel now.
Have a salad and enjoy your evening out.0 -
Turkey Reuben - hold the 1000 Island dressing.0

I believe the trout along with a strategic selection of sides would give you calories to spare. I think the shrimp would likely work as well unless it's drowning in butter and you eat all the sauce. The salad suggestions are solid. I would be interested to hear what you decide.0 -

They probably have a ton of butter, and you end up with more calories than a single sausage (as long as you hold off the curry sauce, I guess).0 -

Yup, for lower calorie options thats the way to go .. for me .. if it's a good restaurant I would order whatever schnitzel they do best for main course, opt for a side salad to go with it, and skip breakfast tomorrow.0 -
Personally I would go for the wienerschnitzel but if you are worried about calories the Whiskey shrimp would give you the authentic meal option for what is probably fewer calories. But me... if I a going to eat out at a place like that and get to enjoy some cultural food would just forget about calories for the day and enjoy myself. The cheese toast sounds yummy too. After all it is only one day.0

I would rather eat trout than Schnitzel. But there's nothing wrong with your approach either.0 -
trout with side salad and coleslaw.0

Sauerbrauten. Ask for the gravy on the side. Sauerkraut and green beans and bacon for your sides.0

Except the trout and shrimp probably have like 300 calories of butter alone... lol. Which is probably the calories of the sausage (if you don't eat much gravy).0 -
Thanks everyone. I ended up going with the grilled chicken salad, no onions no croutons, lite italian dressing, and about 1/3 of a slice of the cheese toast.0

No schnitzel makes me sad. But good for you.0

Well I know what I am having for dinner...0

I must honestly say that I see nothing German on the menue. Sauerkraut normally is fairly low in calories, and a grilled sausage might not be so bad either. So why not have a grilled sausage with mustard, sauerkraut and a salad. No cheese or heavy dressings.0
