Does anyone know a brand of salsa in Canada that has lower sodium? I am the only one who eats salsa in my household so I don`t really want to make it - I would rather buy it.

    If it's salsa in a jar, it's going to have significant sodium. Consider getting a little electric chopper, a pound of tomatoes, some chillis, peppers, onions and cilantro. Five minutes, no added sodium.

    Make your own! I have an easy recipe.
    Red, and green tomatoes
    onion
    Cilantro
    cumin
    Garlic
    1tablespoon or less of sugar to taste
    vinegar
    fresh jalapeno to taste

    chop all ingredients, put in a bowl, add sugar, seasonings, and vinegar. stir well and refriegerate. If you do not like it chunky, u can add a little low sodium tomato sauce and blend well.

    I picked up this cheap chopper (not at WalMart, but this is the first link that came up) for about $30... made awesome taboulleh and salsa that day.

    All premade salsa's have added sodium and are therefore high in sodium period.

    Make your own garden salsa and you can make it in any manner you want, even a spicy mango salsa, a lime cilantro salsa or something fancy like that can add some interest to others in the house to eat it too :)

    I usually take 4 large hot house tomatoes and dice it ultra small + 1 medium white onion diced ultra small + 2 jalepenos or serrano peppers diced ultra small + spring onions (instead of cilantro) diced + with a sprinkle of salt + a light pour of olive oil + lime juice to tame the heat if the peppers were too hot. It's fantastic with homemade garlic parmesean pita chips.

    I often make my own salsa also. That's why I have 4 roma tomatoes growing in the garden. But .... to answer the question as it was asked, there are some low sodium commercial salsas out there. I can't speak to what's available in Canada since I'm in the United States. The one I find easiest to locate in regular supermarkets is Newman's Own Mild Salsa with 65 mg per serving. Organic food companies often add less salt so checking the organic aisle or a health food store might be useful. Enrico's and Green Mountain Gringo are sometimes available there.

    If you want to order online, my personal favorites are from www.gunthersgourmet.com. They have a big selection with sodium as low as 25 mg per serving. The Chesapeake Bay Crab at 65 and Salsa Verde at 25 are my favorites. www.healthyheartmarket.com specializes in low saodium products and carry a number of different salsas. I know that they do ship to Canada.

    Not true, Newman's own mild has 65mg of sodium for 2 TBSP. To me, that's a win. I am not sure if it's available in Canada though. I was on a strict low sodium diet last year and I loved this over scrambled eggs/egg whites :)

    Any jarred salsa has a lot of sodium. You can find a lower (but still not as low if you made it yourself) version in the fresh foods area of your grocery store - so where you would find the hummus or guacamole in plastic containers. I find mine in Zehrs - it's in a plastic container, not a jar. I've also found some at the local farmer's market. It likely costs more per serving than the jarred (and making your own), but it does contain a less sodium. I've tried my hand at making my own and I'm no good at it. Practice makes perfect, I suppose. Maybe it's time I tried again - especially now with all the fresh veggies available at the market.

    There aren't that many in Canada that are low sodium prepared salsa unless you want to be spending $5 plus a jar.

    It's really quick to make your own. I roughly chop tomatoes, jalapeno, finely chop onions, a bit of cilantro and some pepper... put in a food processor and pulse until it's the consistency you want. Takes all of 5 minutes if that.
