Core/Ab Exercises

Do core and ab exercises actually help slim the mid section? Or does it just strengthen? I'm not looking for abs, but it's something I am determined to shrink! And probably the most asked question, but what exercises (combo of exercises) help me slim my mid section? Running? Sit ups? Nutrition?

The only thing that slims anything is eating at a deficit. Core exercises wil strengthen your core, but only losing the fat by eating at a deficit to burn it off will expose it.0
