Venison

Hello all!
Does anyone here eat venison on a regular basis? I've done some wider reading on the subject which seems largely positive on the protein and vitamin content but I wondered if anyone had first hand experience of inclusion in a balanced diet?
Cheers,
J

It's fine.
Anything is fine.0 -
We used to, when my kids were little. Two years in a row a friend who hunted filled our freezer for us. I personally don't like venison steak. Chops are nice if you don't overcook them. The ground meat, I used in EVERYTHING! Best chili you'll ever eat.0

I love venison and eat it regularly. It is low In fat [compared to beef] and has lots of protein. My son, who is a professional Chef has just given me a whole, butchered deer for the freezer. I have steaks, striploins, fillets and braising cuts.
I flash fry the fillets in stir fries
I pan fry the steaks and striploins and have with a redcurrant sauce
I slow cook the braising with blueberries, juniper berries and port wine
Did I say I LOVE venison0 -
I forgot to say that I make a stock from the bones for the braising cuts.0

I eat venison year round. Its how I grew up and is a normal way of life for me.0

I love venison and will be getting back out into the woods this year for the first time in a long time. Honing my bow skills and hoping to get two to have meat for a good portion of the year.0

Had it twice in the past week and have much more in the freezer. If you know how to cook it correctly and which cuts to use for which meals, it is wonderful!
I guess my profile pic would give away the fact I eat venison.0 -

I eat it when available (my fiance and his dad have not been hunting in a while). I enjoy the taste, and it's pretty lean. It can be tricky to cook with (gets tough easily if not cooked properly), so I'm on a learning curve.0 -
Venison is great, elk is the best.0

I've never tried elk. We're going to a game restaurant sometime soon to celebrate my promotion, and I'm waffling between the game sampler and just getting antelope:

I don't eat it on a regular basis but it's really delicious. Just make sure when you cook it you do it blue to rare other wise it's a tasteless hockey puck.0

I grew up on venison. My dad always hunted 2-3 a year and we butchered and froze it. Stew, steak, burgers, sausage...whole nine yards. I'd love to be able to eat it more but most of the people where I live now go moose hunting and I don't like it much.0

If you get it ground, make sure you trust the source. If ground, they can use fatty beef or pork to make it taste better and look like more food. Get it in steak form.0

Yes, but I'm all out until Dec. (hopefully). I don't get a deer some years and have become discouraged because there are a lot of deer where I hunt, except there are also a lot of unethical hunters who ruin it for some of us who are trying to be fair. Game wardens enable it... for the past 2 years, after getting fed up for quite awhile, I turned in some tips. For one of them, they put an illegal permanent tree stand on state land (only temporary stands are allowed), killed a buck, cut off its antlers, and left the rest there. That really upsets me.0

Thanks everyone for your responses - pretty much covers everything I wanted to know.
Just to make sure, can I eat it the same way I eat beef, rare to medium-rare?0 -

Yes. You actually want to cook venison more on the rare/med-rare side as cooking it too long will turn it tough because of how lean it is.

We do a lot of "different" meat for meals: buffalo, duck, venison, etc. If it's a steak or bigger cut I will soak it for the day in an ice water/salt mixture to draw out the blood and get rid of the "gamey' taste then marinate and cook as needed.0

Honestly I would cook it blue to rare. Anything over that and it's going to be like eating shoe leather.0
