To be "toned" you need muscles and lower body fat. You can get that by lifting weights in a progressive program. Meaning add more weight as it becomes easier.

I spent years doing diet and cardio and only saw the toned results I wanted once I started lifting heavy. I did stronglifts 5x5.

You can look at my profile. The fit with abs pic is me the same weight at the other pic. One is lifting, one is without. That is how much lifting make a difference in body composition and looking toned.

See below post. :) Staci is awesome but wasn't saved on my computer.

Pick up heavy things and put them down...

    Meet Staci...

Believe it or not, she’s 11 pounds HEAVIER (142 pounds) in the picture on the right (May 2011) compared to the picture on the left (131 pounds, October 2010).

    Good beginner programs:

    StrongLifts 5x5
    Starting Strength
New Rules of Lifting For Women
    New Rules of Lifting
    StrongCurves

And there are many more...my advice would be to follow some established beginners program for best results. Doing your own things probably isn't going to have the best results because it takes a lot of knowledge to program your own routine without missing muscles/muscle groups or over-training others...muscular imbalances, etc.
