Sodium in sub sandwiches

I know that places like Subway aren't ALL that healthy but my family does eat there, as well as other sub shops, every so often. I like subs (especially tuna, black olives, onions, and lettuce....yum!) but I can't believe just how much sodium is in them.

Tonight my mom went out and brought back subs....Jersey Mike's #7 (Turke and veggies on wheat bread) One 6" sub has 920g of sodium. That's almost half the sodium I eat in a day!

My question is two part.
1.) WHY are these subs so high in sodium? Is it the bread? The cheese? The meats? The veggies? Are all the ingredients just heavily salted for taste?
2.) Is going over your sodium really that bad? I know it makes you retain water but water weight is easier to lose than fat weight, right? I don't have high blood pressure either....so would it really be that bad to go over my sodium today?

I haven't eaten the sub yet but I'm probably going to have a side salad instead of eating two sandwhiches. I reallyyyyy love subs though!

I'm going to guess it's the deli meat. It's crazy how much sodium is in a serving of sliced turkey.

I am absolutely jealous of you right now though because Jersey Mike's is the best and one just opened nearby (haven't had it since I lived in Florida) and I've yet to go have one. I think I may go get one next week now because of your post :P. Oh and sodium intake can affect blood pressure and the cardiovascular system but I don't think going over on your sodium occasionally is going to be all that bad. I try to watch my sodium but I do go over and often but I know for a fact that I'm eating much less than I used to so that in itself is progress :P.

Yep, it's the meat and the bread - I was advised to eat 1/2 the bread and go for a plain roasted chicken breast, load up on the veggies.

It must be the Meat...The Veggie Delight has abt 400 odd sodium.

Although It might Even be the Dressings

I don't think going over occationally is the end of the world. Going over daily is bad news.

"Consuming too much salt can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, edema and kidney stones."
