Protein amounts for weight loss

So I read you need .75 grams of protein per lb of body weight. So is this bunk or does this have merit, because MFP doesn't give me anywhere near that.

I think it is .75 or whatever per lean body mass rather than your entire weight (at least that is how I have heard it, I don't know for sure), but at any rate I think if mfp protein goal as a minimum to hit rather than a max because it does seem to be quite low.0
