For the love of all that is holy, how do I weigh & log my avocado?

I ate a whole avocado yesterday. I cut it in half, removed the pit and peel, and cut into bite-sized pieces. Weighed them and it was 155g of avocado "flesh".
This is how I have been doing it for a while and someone said I should weigh with the pit and skin. That sounds like nonsense. Is what I'm doing correct? I can't find a definitive answer. Even the USDA site isn't clearing things up for me.
Thank you!!!

I wouldn't log the pit and skin because you don't eat them. The same goes for a banana, I weigh it after I remove the peel.2
-
I believe that's correct, I have some almost every day and that's how I do it0
-
If I don't eat it, I don't weigh it!
I don't count the peel when I eat a banana - I just weigh the edible part.2 -
For something like that, I would weigh it all first. Then eat what I want out of it, and when I'm done, weigh whatever is left over that I'm going to trash. And then I log the difference.
Which is basically what it sounds like you're doing anyway, just the other way round.1 -
Whoever told you that is wrong. That's the nicest thing I can say.
You only need to log what you eat. I usually weigh the whole thing, eat the flesh, and then weigh the remaining pit/skin and subtract that from the weight of the whole thing. But your method--weighing only the flesh--gives the same number. Your method is correct.
I don't understand why avocados and bananas cause so much confusion for people. Saying that you have to log the skin and pit is like saying you have to log the foam tray that meat comes on.10 -
Common sense. Not that common anymore. (Your friend not you, ketorach.)0

I just weigh and log what I eat.

It is nonsense. Including the weight of the pit and skin is like including the styrofoam and plastic when you weigh a pack of chicken breasts. Weigh and log what you eat.0
-
What you are doing is correct.0
-
Why would you weigh what you don't eat? Do you weigh your yogurt container and log it? Log your peanut butter jar? Log the box your pasta comes in? If you don't log the packaging for other items I wouldn't log it for fruits and veggies either.0

This was a professional. Ugh.
I knew it was crazy talk.

Whaaaaat?! Cray!0

Yeah, don't **** with me and my avocado. She said, "How much avocado are you eating? A medium sized avocado is like 500 calories."
No, it isn't. My avocado was 155g, 248 kcal. Thankyouverymuch.

Calories counts are only for edible portions, so they do not include banana peel, egg shells, or avocado pits and skins.
Foods like potato where you can eat the peel have options for with and without the peel. (There's more fiber in the peel.)0 -
You're doing it right. I know that article about eating the avocado seed was floating around one of the forums, but I doubt you're doing it, so that's not part of the weigh of the food you're eating.
You don't weight the entire cow when you're eating a steak either. I hope..... oh boy.0 -
Keep doing it how you are0
-
The calories given are for edible parts only.0
-
I remember a thread a while ago where a well know poster was arguing that you had to weigh the apple core and include it when logging. So I can totally believe someone said something so... asinine. Keep on doing what you're doing OP, you're doing good.0
-
That person was wrong. You are right. Now I want avocado.

Since you aren't eating the pit and skin it doesn't make sense to log that part. You could choose an entry from the database that is raw avocado, flesh only and weigh the part you are eating only.
Or you could weigh the whole thing and then weight the pit and skin and subtract them. I would think the results would be the same.0 -

This would make sense if you eating from it throughout the day and finishing it the same day but if you dont finish it that day and it takes you another two days then how do you handle the left over weight? Do you go back to your log for three days and break down the weight into thirds and subtract from your weight entry two days prior?0 -

Someone is really messing with you. Whatdja do to her?0 -
1/5th of medium is 50 calories so you can kind of gauge by that how to measure. 1 Ounce is considered a serving or 1/5th of medium.

I just hate logging so much, so if I was logging my favorite-freaking-food incorrectly, I'd have been really sad.

You are doing it right. You only need to log what you actually eat. You wouldn't weigh banana peels or orange peels. And thanks for this thread. I've been trying to decide on what to fix for dinner tonight. I was thinking tacos and now I'm definitely having them. Avocados are one of my favorites.0

Sounds delicious. I like avocado chicken salad.
I also like avocado... in a bowl with salt.0 -
well obviously it all depends on what the entry in MFP is for. If it is for a whole avocado then yes you would weigh the whole thing then eat it (because that entry already takes into account the extra non-edible weight). If it specifies flesh only then it is exactly that.0

I'll have to try that.

I also like it with tuna, but you can't go wrong with just a little salt.0
