Your body cleanses itself. Is there a reason for doing it, and only for a short time?
@Traveler120 the problem is that people use cleanses and detoxes (or call them that) for a 'quick fix' 'metabolic booster' or some other rubbish - Not necessary. In this case he's not going to get enough protein (unless legumes are a part of vegetables), or fats (unless eating high fat foods). He may get some energy from fruit sugars and carbs but they can be rather temporary.
He's not doing some dubious 'cleanse' with some artificial or processed mystery product. All he's doing is eating ACTUAL FOOD, nutrient dense food at that, and calling it a 'cleanse'. You may say it's not necessary, but is there anything wrong with it? No.
And let's say he doesn't get as much protein or fat as he's accustomed to. What's going to happen? Is his body going to implode and cave in on itself because he got only 60g of protein and not 100? Come on!
And what do you mean by temporary energy from fruits and carbs? I have yet to hear of any foods that give permanent energy.
I don't recall anywhere in there where I said it was wrong or dubious/I was answering your statement about people losing their poop over the word cleanse. I never said that there was going to be a physical implosion, you seem to be taking a lot of assumptions from what I said. Do I think for a week it would be an issue? No not at all, but depending on how he keeps up with his nutrients he could see some side effects. Why aren't you jumping on the person that said that they should never be recommended, or the person who said they'd be shocked if he had energy to go to the gym with no protein/fats? ffs sorry for trying to interject a perspective.
As for the temporary energy, I struck that from my sentence, it was not the way I meant it to be worded at all, yay for being interrupted in the middle of a thought.0 -

LOL, none of that makes any sense.
If I say that for just ONE WEEK, I want to do cycling only and do no other form of exercise, would you tell me:
"omg, that's so unnecessary, you should have a balance of cardio and strength training" or
"cycling for only one week will have no long term benefit" or
"why don't you just go cycling and also lift weights"
See how equally ridiculous they all sound?

I'm actually all for the occasional "cleanse".& optimal time is with the change of the seasons. It is totally possible to still consume plenty of protein & healthy fats & carbs while eating just fruits & veggies. Strongly suggest a few days before & after to ease in & out so as not to fully shock the system & make it more easily attainable. You just need to do your research & be well educated, set your intentions & honor your body.
For me personally, when I cleanse I enter it with the intention of conciousness, to become more in tune with my mind, body & spirit. There is a ritual aspect to this style of eating & it can truly shift how you interact & think about food and its connection to your health & well being. There is also an emotional aspect aspect to cleansing.
Suppressed feelings have a tendency to surface and at times can catch you off guard. I recommend in addition to your food diary you have a regular diary to help process & track the whole experience. You may find that your body & mind don't want to "hit the gym hard". Respect intuition and consider alternatives such as walking in nature, yoga, swimming & dancing.
(Yeah these are all the words of *kitten* tree huggin hippie. I'm sure this thread can't wait to rip it to shreds but I rarely let that hinder my contribution Best of luck with your healthy endeavors!
I would love to hear why the change of seasons is the optimal time for a cleanse. Are my toxins noticeably looser during that time and more easily cleansed?3 -
Not necessary but does not matter much because it will be less than a week in real life.0

If you posted that you would only do cycling for one week because you believed it would cleanse your body of toxins then yes I would tell you it was unnecessary. You can just bike or eat only broccoli for a week and it won't harm you but know that it is not necessary for weight loss or to be healthy.3 -
Usually when people write that they are going to just eat fruit and veg for a week, they are under a mistaken notion that that will help in weight loss in some way, either by being a "jumpstart" or "cleanse" or otherwise have some special effect beyond the calories. They also--and this is what my post was trying to get at--often seem to think that a diet of just fruit and veg is some kind of super healthy ideal (and that's why it is a "jumpstart" or "cleanse"). IMO, that isn't helpful in actually learning to make your diet healthier (if the idea is to figure out how to want those foods and not others it might even be counterproductive), and tends to show a lack of knowledge about nutrition (like the benefits of protein and healthy fat). Of course, if OP means something else -- like a carefully structured plan with a mix of fruit and veg including some sources of fat, and legumes and nuts -- I would be wrong and he could have answered that question.
I agree that there's no harm from doing it for a week anyway (I said so above), but that's also why there's unlikely to be any positives. It smacks of all or nothing thinking--I'll do this as a fix, vs. I'll think about how to incorporate more veg and fruit into my diet and make it more healthful overall.
It's entirely possible that OP has reasons not expressed that would change my mind (I'm pretty open to diet experiments and think a plant-based one is a worthy thing to try out), that's why this is a discussion and the fact he posted seems to suggest he wants to engage in one. It's also true, of course, that the ultimate opinion on what he should do is his, whether he explains his reasoning or not. I've certainly ignored advice on MFP before, sometimes to later decide I was wrong, but plenty of times because I knew what was right for me and not having reason to change my mind later.1 -

the calories can be enough, if you eat enough. I did something similar for a week in a hot country. There is protein in vegetables (see "vegan") and in my view one can do almost anything for a week.0
