Proats (Protein Oats) how not to end up with scrambled egg goop

Hi folks. Can anyone give me advice on how to use protein powder to make hot "proats" (protein & oats)? I have tried a few times and ended up with a nasty scrambled egg textured mess both when adding powder before microwaving the oats and also adding it after cooking the oats.

Do some whey powders work better than others for this or am I just inept?!

I add it after cooking the oats, but it probably depends a lot on your protein powder. I use quest and it mixes up great.

I use optimum nutrition gold standard. Add after cooking. I then add a bit extra water to help mix and also cool the oatmeal down for eating. You can also add a bit of milk at the end too. Always works out great for me.

Mix the protein powder with water before adding to cooked oats.

I actually add mine before I microwave it. I only use a small amount of protein powder so maybe that's why it doesn't affect the texture too much? I like it, it kind of imitates milk without me actually adding any.

Thanks folks, I'll try adding it to water before mixing. That might be the trick. Or buy a new powder!

Ditto quest is the best for proats.

I made something called "No-oatmeal" a few years ago. The recipe went something like this:

    One egg, beaten
    one mashed banana
a few tbsp of nut butter (almond or cashew works best, but I used apple butter, too, and it was delish)
a dash of cinnamon or vanilla extract

Mix it all up together, then microwave for 2 minutes. Pause every 25-30 seconds to mix with a fork.

It comes out with the consistency of soft oatmeal, but very few carbs and super high in protein.

I may have to start doing this again...

Assuming 3 Tbsp of almond butter (you said a "few"), that's about
egg, 75 calories, 6 g protein, no carbs
    banana, 75 calories, 1 g protein, 18 g carbs
almond butter, 285 calories, 9 g protein, 9 carbs (no protein to speak of if you're apple butter, and lots more carbs, but fewer calories)

for a total of 435 calories, 16 g protein, and 27 g carbs. I wouldn't describe that as "super high" in protein, and I don't think most people trying to substantially limit their carbs would call it "very few carbs." Is there something missing from you recipe? Are you using tiny bananas? Using a lot less than "a few tbsp" of nut butter? (but in that case the protein would be a lot less)
