I had got my self down to 55kg (120ish) before i fell expecting. Im 4 weeks post birth now and am 65kg (143). I want to get back to about 56kg but have never lost weight while breastfeeding before. Usually I gain alot due to being so hungry. Has anyone else had experience losing weight while breastfeeding that can offer some advice? The mfp app has suggested 1200 calories for me but thats not taking into account that im feeding. Im asuming i need more like 1800? Im going have lots of small meals throughout the day and resume excersise in a few weeks but unsure of how much weight i should be losing a week.

I am 8 mo pp breastfeeding baby 4 and am within 3 lbs of pre pregnancy weight (2-3 lbs usually hang around until I wean the baby). From my exp:

    1. Do not restrict calories until breastfeeding firmly established. Usually 2-3 months.
    2. 1800-2000 calories, minimum until baby takes solids, around 6 mo. I began counting calories around 3 months pp and have been steadily losing with 1820 cals and eating all earned activity cals. Watch yourself and baby for clues--baby fussy and seems hungry? You feel more fatigued? Losing too fast? Up your cals.
    3. 1 lb a week should be reasonable--perhaps more at first when you are still losing excess fluid from pregnancy.

First, don't start cutting calories until your first post-partum check, at least.

Second, at MINIMUM, eat 1800 calories. Shoot for no more than a lb a week loss.

You should be okay for LIGHT exercise (like short walks), but be kind to your body and don't do anything more strenuous until you get your OB's go ahead. If you start feeling pain, stop. Believe me, the lady bits will be sore. Don't push it too hard or do too much.

I just want to add that I lost 50 lbs in 2013. After being pregnant and having my baby in 2014 I'm still struggling. My daughter is almost 2 and still breastfeeds. I was actually gaining weight when I first started breastfeeding. :( I have to work a lot harder to get the weight down when I'm breastfeeding than normal.

I have lost nearly 4 kilos since he was born but im asuming that was just fluid rather than fat. Based on what you guys are saying i should maybe wait a little while longer before i start focusing too much on counting calories. Its hard because i usually gain after giving birth and i really dont want to this time i also dont want to effect my milk supply!

I started my weight loss at 4 weeks post partum. My milk supply was established and I didn't restrict too much. With only 20 lbs to lose, I would personally aim to lose only a half pound per week. That way you can start getting into good habits but not restricting too much. I had much more weight to lose than you but still aimed for just 1 pound a week. Weigh your food, drink lots of water, and eat extra protein. Protein is going to be really important with nursing.
