What can I do to avoid losing a lot of muscle instead of fat

    Do strength resistance training with bands, dumbells, TRX, barbells, bodyweight, etc.
    Lose slowly, about 1 lb per week unless you're extremely overweight.
    Eat enough protein.

    Lift challenging weights, get adequate protein, and avoid ridiculous calorie deficits.
