Go outside, if you are already inside all day stuck at a desk I would think some sunshine and a walk would be something that might just make you smile too! I started walking around my neighborhood, then hiking parks in my town, then I bought a bicycle and now enjoy bike trails too. I had not rode a bike for 20 years and yes, it is just like they say you never forget. Video's, Wii and Treadmills are fine and get the job done, but something about actually being outside makes me just feel more energized and happy.
  • Ok, here's another alternative: is it possible for you to keep a resistance band at work? You could easily get some kind of simple at-your-chair-at-your-desk exercises done at lunches or breaks.
Hmm, that would probably work, I never even thought of a resistance band. Basically anything that keeps me within arms reach of the phone would be doable. Thanks! :-D
Google desk exercises. There are stretches you can do while seated. Exercise at your desk.
I looked into this a couple months ago, and perhaps my google-fu failed me, but all I found was things like kegels, and my vagina feels as weak as ever. Any tips on specific desk exercises or stretches?

I go outside every opportunity I get, but most days I'm stuck indoors with work from 7AM until 8PM, sometimes later than that. I really only go out at night during the summer though when it's still sort of light out after 8, I live in the woods, there's bears (I have bears in my yard at least once a week) and I'm kind of afraid of the dark, lol. An exercise bike seems kind of expensive, but I've thought just lifting my regular bikes tires off of the ground with a jack stand or something, but I don't know if that would actually do anything because there would be no resistance of the tires on the ground.
  • These are great suggestions!

I have the same problem where I work--I'm a librarian (and total nerd!) and a lot of my shift is sitting at the reference desk. When I'm not doing that, I'm sitting at my own desk. I make a point of getting up quite a bit though so I'm not sitting there the entire time.

I love the Wii Fit. Doing different games (Wii Sports, EA Active, Zumba, etc) helped me drop 30 pounds when I first started my weight loss journey. There are also great videos on youtube as well, as a previous poster mentioned. I have a lot of fitness dvds at home too--I really like the Walk at Home series by Leslie Sansone. I just recently found one that includes 2 minute jogging intervals and the whole workout is 30 minutes. It's great for getting in a quick workout without leaving your house.

You might also check your local library (shameless library plug, I know LOL) to see what they have as far as fitness dvds. We have all kinds where I work and they're great for keeping variety in your workouts.

Hey, I'm all for library plugs. I actually just picked up a (childrens) book from the library the other day to show an (adult) friend of mine who tried arguing that kids books aren't art, boy was she wrong!

Book was Round Trip by Ann Jonas, an excellent "read" for everyone, it will blow your mind! It's worth the five minutes it takes to read it, go get it from the library today everyone!
  • Check this out for some desk-ercises:

Children's books are great--I love taking a look a the new picture books when they come in. I took an entire class in grad school on Children's Lit. It was actually my favorite.

Sports or bike stores have rollers that you can get for your road bike. Makes it act like a stationary exercise bike. It's even possible to change how tough the ride is. Not too expensive - maybe around $75-100.
