Any open water swimmers?

I love open water swimming but haven't done it in a couple of years. Would like to get serious about it and do a race. I live in the DFW area and there are a couple of lakes around but I think my best bet is to train in the pool for awhile. Goal is to swim a 6k in Colorado in August. Any suggestions or success stories?

Master your breathing technique. Consider meeting with a coach a couple times to examine your technique & help make improvements.1

I would recommend that you start in the pool and build up your endurance and distance. You may want to look for a local Masters swim club or Tri club. They often sponsors open water swim clinics, the group can help make the transition to open water more comfortable.
What event are you planning in CO?1
