Weighing meat

Hi, can anyone tell me should I weigh my meat before or after cooking. I've just had pork chops for Dinner and the packaging says per chop typically 180g is 486 calories. After cooking in the oven I weighed it and it was only 88g some of which was bone also. So which weight do I go off and does this apply for all meat?

I weigh my meats after I cook them because it's easier for me. If there is a bone I cut the bone out & trim fat before weighing. For a pork chop I would search pork chop, cooked, USDA, boneless. I was always told weigh cooked - log cooked, weigh raw - log raw. When you look up meats, fruits or veggies be sure to use USDA in the description otherwise you might get some random food somebody has entered to the database.0

I weigh raw and cooked and then figure the difference and I log the raw numbers. I usually cook up a lot of chicken or beef at once, so I just write myself a note like "4 oz raw = 3.2 cooked". Log 4 oz raw, eat 3.2 cooked.
Weight of cooked meat can vary a ton depending on how you cook it. (I'm pretty bad at overcooking and having really dry meat. heh heh heh. )1 -

I've asked this question before and I'm glad I did because I was doing it wrong the whole time. Most of the time the packaging will say serving size-raw or serving size-cooked. That's how you should weigh it if it's possible. Chicken/fish/steak serving sizes are usually raw. Though, my jenni-o turkey sausage says 2oz cooked. So, you should always check the labels. However, weighing raw might not always be possible. A lot of times I cook my meat in bulk so I can't weigh raw. Therefore, I weigh the cooked meat for whatever I'm making for my meals for that day. Therefore, if you've cooked the meat just input the word "cooked" in the search box. For example, search boneless, skinless chicken breast cooked and the right entry will come up. 3oz of cooked meat has more calories than 3oz of raw so you want to make sure you're inputting correctly.1 -

Raw meats does loose some fluids (intra-muscular & fats) as it cooks.
Hence, you will find the cooked meats weighing a bit less than what it did when raw.
I always weigh all my foods cooked.... this way I know how much I am consuming.

If you're doing something like a grilled or pan-seared meat, weigh cooked. If you're putting raw meat into a braising liquid and calculating calories on the whole dish (like a pot roast), then weigh raw. Fat and moisture will render away when grilling or pan-searing, and not much of that comes with the meat when you're done cooking. But in a braise/slow cooker it's all staying in your pot. Also, if there is a bone, weigh the whole piece, eat the piece, then weigh the bone and subtract from the initial weight.1

I guess in hindsight, it doesn't matter how you weigh it. It only matters how you enter it in the system.
