Weak legs/knees

I have attempted lunges recently and discovered that I can't do them without pain. Can anyone recommend some simple exercises that I could do to strengthen them? I am 392 pounds so that can be an issue.

You already have strong legs if you are 392 pounds. Your legs are carrying you around each day, right? Lunges are not an easy exercise, especially if you are out of shape/overweight. I'm not sure what to suggest because my first thought is walking. @ninerbuff do you have suggestions?1

Bodyweight squats, lunges with a reduced range of motion, walking up/down hills or treadmill at an incline, leg lifts, kick backs, fire hydrant kicks (on all fours, lift your leg like you're a doggy about to pee on a fire hydrant). These things will help work your legs.1

Split squats and step-ups tend to be knee-friendlier than lunges. Wide-stance (sumo) squats are worth trying too. Instructions are on Youtube.1
