If you walk for exercise........

I love to walk. It is my primary source of exercise.
Recently I have noticed people talking about how long their walk was (time) not how many miles it was.
My goal is usually 3 miles, But If I am pushed for time or because of weather, I will walk 2 miles then get on the elliptical when I get home.
Should I be trying to walk for a certain amount of time or keep pushing to walk farther.
So which do you do distance or time?

Time is how you Log it on MFP, not distance0

Time and distance. Walking 4 mph is a 15 minute mile. So I will walk 2 miles in 30 minutes and log it as walking 30 minutes at 4 mph.0

Well I walked 17 miles today. In fact I been doing that every day. Holy cow. This is with an ankle that is swollen, sore & actually kinda heated up right about now.
17 miles a day? I refuse to even sit down for dinner till I hit that. Actually that would be the reason I do so much. My back pain does not allow me to sit down at all so all I can do is walk.
But 17 miles a day without sitting down for more than a few mins. :sad:0 -
I have a Fitbit One. It tracks my steps and distance. I also walk mainly on a treadmill, so it tracks my time and distance as well. Before I got the fitbit, I would put a note in the exercise session of exactly how far and how long I walked, plus of course log the exercise. But that note was there if I wanted to look back and see what I'd done as a complete tally.
Happy walking!0 -
Hi There: I love walking too! But I also use my stationary bike.
I don't choose either. Time or Distance-I choose Variety!
I do what I want and feel like that day.
I switch things up though-I carry 2.5 lbs weights sometimes and do bicep curls and tricep extesions when I briskly walk-great pump. I walk for30- 45 mins. depending on my schedule for that day! And mostly around 6 a.m. Beautiful Time!
I also have 2.5 lbs. leg straps I use if I really want to burn my legs.
I do sprint bursts for 60 seconds then continue walking-excellent cardio.
Anyways-This is how I do my walks! Have a great weekend!0 -
I listen to audio books on my walks and usually go for "chapters" vs. a specific time or distance. Or I will set a particular destination, like a store a few miles away, walk there, get a treat or a few grocery items and then return home. Bonus if I get a couple heavier parcels to lug back home.0

I walk by time, because I do it on my property and street, and while walking dogs, which means I have to stop and jog in place while they do their business. It would be really hard to put an actual distance to my walk. It doesn't really matter how you measure it, the best thing is that you keep moving. Doing intervals will help with your calorie burn, say walk fast for a minute, then go back to your normal pace for 2 minutes.0
