I like to lift weights. I am starting my weight loss program. I play tennis, will be doing the treadmill for my cardio. Obviously lifting would burn some calories. However, I am also looking forward to having my lifting show some from the efforts.

Is it better to lose weight to my weight loss goal first, then start lifting? Or would you go ahead and lift weights also, knowing that the fat will prevent much from showing for the lifting effort.

Or will lifting shift some weight from fat to muscle, so while I won't necessarily show the efforts from lifting, AND I will show slower weight loss, I will actually have a better and speedier result by building some mass that won't show till later?

I am not on a time frame or schedule, just getting started on this new plan post surgery.

I don't know what others have done but I have done strength training all through my weight loss journey. It didn't show at first obviously because I was still big, but it helped with overall exercise because I had more strength and endurance to exercise.

Now that I'm smaller the weight lifting shows.

Start now. If you're new to lifting, trying a beginner compound program like Stronglifts 5X5. You can check it out at stronglifts.com, and download the app that tracks your progress in the gym. Five exercises, three times a week, about 45 minutes per session. So you still have time for your other activities as well.
