Adapting a recipe

I've got a cook book for low calorie foods but I've just noticed it serves 4! Well, what if I only want to make enough for one? Sometimes my boyfriend is in work so I'm cooking for myself as he won't want anything when he gets in.
I really don't have a clue about these things, I halved a sauce recipe before but I'm not certain how to do this
thanks

You could cut all the ingredients down to a quarter, but depending on what you're making it might be hard to scale certain things down that much or adjust cook times properly. Why not make the whole recipe and eat leftovers for the week/freeze some for next time your boyfriend's gone? Less cooking and cleaning dishes1
