    Sucks.

I have a friend who is an overseas 777 Captain based at SFO. I'm sure it's not him but stuff like this makes you think.

Live for today, folks. You never know what tomorrow may bring or when it might end.

some of the pics show people carrying their luggage off the plane...the kind of luggage that only fits in over head bins. i would strangle someone if they were in my way and were trying to get their luggage out of a bin.

a few people posted in the comments on one of the news articles that everyone was evacuated and accounted for, didn't say anything about injuries but apparently no fatalities.

One of the articles I read said everyone seemed "pretty much alright".

It sounds like the tail came off after landing. If it's going to come off, AFTER landing is the time you want it to happen.

There's been cases in the past of aircraft that performed a "tail strike" years earlier being improperly repaired. The previous damage is covered up for cosmetic reasons and a crack propagates under the patch with every subsequent flight. All it takes is one moderately hard landing and the tail breaks off.

If the fracture is far back enough the passenger cabin would be largely intact, fuel sources intact, and all the wheels remain on the ground so the plane is largely under control. In this case there was at least some kind of a fire.

Edit: I just looked at a youtube video and the hull is almost entirely intact. The fire is small and appears to be coming form the right wing, probably the engine. It may have been damaged by ingesting debris, etc.

It is likely everyone will be ok, just scared out of their wits and maybe some sore backs/necks.

Yeah, the train thing sounds like it has much worse potential for injuries and death. 60 people still missing after most of a day.

Everyone is okay?? I'm watching the news now and it is a terrifying sight...it looks like a roasted shell and these reporters are saying there are "some" survivors. The back end of the plane looks intact...
Whatever the facts are, positive vibes to every person involved.

im reading that the planes landing gear hit the approach sea wall. this caused the plane to begin to cartwheel...

    The facts so far:

The aircraft landed short of the runway at SFO. The tail (not the landing gear) did hit the seawall, which caused it to separate from the fuselage. The plane landed (without cartwheels) more or less intact and came to a semi controlled stop. The tail broke off aft of the rear pressure bulkhead (ie the cabin was not ripped open, only the very tail came off).

There was a brief fireball on impact, which quickly burned out. After most of the passengers and crew disembarked, an explosion started a second fire that consumed the aircraft.

There are 2 confirmed fatalities, 10 in critical condition, 60 unaccounted for. It is the first 777 accident with fatalities.
