GOUT!!!!!!!!

I have been on a maintenance dose of allopurinol for gout for many years and it has been under control. Now that I am losing weight I am starting to get pain from it (it's unmistakable). I have been drinking TONS of water and my diet mostly consists of grilled meat (mostly chicken & fish), steamed or sautéed veggies and complex carbs. I have upped my cardio to 4 days per week with 2 days weight training. Has anyone else experienced a gout attack as a result of weight loss or increased exercise?

Have you seen a nutritionist specifically for gout? Something you are eating could still be causing it to flare up and give you pain. Not sure how it relates to weightloss though sorry! Increased exercise with the infammation still present is the only thing I can think of0

My husband has gout and it got worse too, he had already quit eating red meat and drinking beer...but we learned foods that we didn't know were triggers included herring, tuna, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, scallops, turkey, goose, wild game, asparagus, mushrooms, peas, spinach, cauliflower, fava and garbanzo beans, Dates, prunes, lychees, plums, cherries, pears, and high fat dairy products. The doctor said that the animal products were the most offensive but after he eliminated those if he was still having problems to try eliminating the plant and dairy products. He was eating a lot of tuna, turkey, scallops, wild game, asparagus, and mushrooms. So we eliminated these and he hasn't had any trouble since. Definitely a nutritionist can help!

Check with your doctor - maintenance dose may not be the same at your new weight.1

Too much meat will do that as well as losing weight too quickly . It would be very difficult to exercise when you are having a gout attack the pain is consuming . Look up high purine foods and try to limit those with the highest purines you are on the right track drinking lots of water . Drink sour cherry juice if you can get it . Cherry Extract capsules are available and they help get rid of the Uric acid . I use turmeric, grated ginger with a little raw honey it gets rid of inflammation not sure if you can take that with your alupurinol . Hope it clears up soon nothing worse than the pain of gout .0

I was fine on my maintenance dose and really didn't watch what I ate or drank. Now I've cut out alcohol, eat much less red meat, and have had a rapid weight loss. 20+ lbs in 30 days. My problem is I don't think my GP would be of much help as he prescribes the allopurinol and has never even checked my uric acid levels & the rheumatologist who helped me control it has a very long wait for an appointment.0

Check with your neurologist too.0

Yes, unfortunately losing weight and exercise can affect your uric acid levels and trigger a flare. But when you get your weight down it's entirely possible you could go off of the allopurinol, so it's still worth it.0 -
Ok, just got back from Trader Joes with some cherry juice and ordered some cherry extract from Amazon. I'll report back in a few days. Thanks for the suggestion. I think if it does not get any worse, I'll try to stick it out without changing my meds until I shed some more weight.0

Pretty much says you need to be a vegetarian to reduce uric acid. When I was 1st diagnosed I was given a list on 8x10 paper, four columns of food and drink that can cause a gout attack and then another 8x10, four columns of food and drink that can should be ok without causing a gout attack. I would say that 10% were on both lists. If you can narrow it down to one or two items that do it to you, then you are lucky. For the rest of us, not so much.0

Most likely it was the rapid weight loss that brought on an attack, for some reason that increases Uric acid in the joints . Better to lose slowlly I'd think 1-2 pounds a week would be good . The cherry juice and extracts will help but not fast enough when you are in pain .hope you feel better soon .0

Thanks for the kind sentiments. After 4 days of cherry juice and switching to cherry juice extract capsules, the attack has subsided, but not yet gone. It never did get to a debilitating full out attack but it did have me limping a little for a while. I guess if it is the feeling of fat leaving my body, I'll take it for now. Although I had a rapid weight loss at 1st, I'm settling in to 2-3lbs per week. I have a scheduled check up in a month. If it is still not under control, I'll see if I can get my GP to get up to speed on uric acid levels and gout.1

I was taking the cherry stuff for about 6 months and had a flare up that was multiplied. Additionally continued cherry extract use can build a toxin over extended time. Apple cider vinegar actually works to re balance acid levels over time. Additionally if you are taking any fish oil supplements make sure they don't have glucosamine. This is derived from shellfish which can cause flares.1

Google Mayo Clinic Gout. They have great trusted info! Make sure you aren't consuming sources of concentrated fructose.1
