40 and Feeling it...

Hello,
Been battling the bulge since i was 24. 6'2", 247 lbs as of this morning. I'm either 100% committed to diet & exercise or I'm a disaster. I've always been an athlete, even when my body doesn't look like it, which is doesn't more than it does for the past few years. Unfortunately old injuries spring up more and more when I'm overweight and derail my efforts. A few doctors have told me I should find alternatives to running with my arthritic knees and back...unfortunately that's my favorite cardio.
Just had a physical at around my 40th birthday and I'm borderline on my lipids as well as glucose. Type 2 diabetes runs in my family, as does heart disease. Both of my parent's are alive and very active in their 60s. They are a big part of my 3 year old twins' lives and I want to be able to do that for my grandkids some day. I grew up with a healthy, active family and I want my kids to have the same.
My diet issues have always been portion control...lots of too much of good things (and some bad). Haven't eaten fast food in 20 years but sure love a beer, burger, and fries! Not a traditional junk food snacker, but will open the fridge for some cheese or salami out of habit after work. I enjoy beer and wine, mainly on weekends, and overeat when I drink.
I eat out for lunch every day at work and it's a big problem. It's a big social part of my job both with employees and customers. It is really unnerving for some reason when I go to a restaurant and have to resist the bread or chips and then order a chicken salad while everyone else is eating sluttier entrees.
Anyway, I've enjoyed my fitbit so I'm going to give food tracking a try as well! Hoping some accountability will help in the short & long run!
Thanks,
loungesong

*kitten*, you're my twin separated in maternity warden!
Apart from me never having had a proper physical - hence not knowing how deep I'm in it - just about everything matches,
all the way down to disliking paying attention to eating out with customers and co-workers.0 -
We even look the same!0

Ha. Whats you're new eating out strategy?0

I verbally abuse my co-workers until they stop smirking, whip the kitchen staff to do my bidding, and pretend to customers it's something they missed on the menu. It took a while to get to this point, but it helps we only go to two-three different places.
Literally, the pain of having to shut people up who know everything better, and becoming overnight one of those difficult customers with random changes to a perfectly good menu was quite much. Enough so, that I stayed at the workshop eating tuna from a can and muttering to myself for the first week.0 -
Wow. Frightening how close it sounds...how are you doing with your goals?0
