ADHD & Appitite

Due to ADD medications, I often forget to eat and go through the day, and even workout every afternoon, on as little as coffee and an apple or banana. I simply do not want to eat and if I do I feel gross. Although I am trying to lose weight for dance, I want to do it in a way that won't completely kill me. I don't want my muscles to shake like they've done before if I don't eat enough:( Help!

Almost sounds like an eating disorder on top of your ADD?
Talk to your mom?
Are you in high school? School counselor?0 -
No I've just recently started taking ADD medication and my eating habits were normal until then. It doesn't matter want med it is, they all make me loss my appetite and that is a side effect I have to deal with:/ I am a senior in high school and a serious dancer who trains 6 days a week!0

I'm on Adderall so I get what you mean about having literally no appetite for an extreme amount of time. My XR one tends to wear off around 4 pm and that's when I'm all of a sudden starving. However, I do remind myself to eat throughout the day, and I don't feel gross about it. It concerns me that it makes you feel gross. Maybe speak to your doctor about that there3

Due to the extremely long day I have, I'm on vyvanse and ir dexedrine which is made to last till I finish my homework around midnight. So by the time my meds wear off and I'm hungry, it's 2am and time for bed! Also all meds give me nausea, making me feel gross!

You're on both vyvanse and ir dexedrine???!!! Why double dosing?? No wonder you're not eating and feeling gross! You need to speak with your doctor about re-evaluating your dosages, especially if they're making you feel awful.0 -

So, I have a 19 year old who was diagnosed and subsequently medicated for ADHD back when she was in junior high. She still take medication as part of her treatment plan. She too struggled (and probably still does) with never feeling hungry - it is a side effect of most medications for ADHD. Your treatment plan is one your and your doctor are working out to help you succeed. The issue of eating can be managed. What I did for my daughter, was had her eat a large breakfast that included the weight gain version of Ensure (if you are trying to lose weight, then there is no need for the weight gain formula - the regular formula has a nice balance of vitamins and minerals you may be missing due to not eating). Eating before you take the medications will definitely help with the nausea. Also she scheduled her eating. Hungry or not, she had planned meals and snacks - even if is was less than the average person would eat. Regular planned small snacks and meals also helped with the nausea as nausea throughout the day could be low blood sugar because you are not eating enough.
If you balance your meals throughout the day, it will also help alleviate the ravenous hunger when your medications wear off. You can also plan to have a serving of vegetables and a little fruit as your meds wear off as this can also alleviate those hunger pangs as you are preparing to go to bed.
These eating schedules and ideas were from her psychiatrist, and were very helpful for her. Maybe they can help you as well. Also, talk to your doctor about the side effects. If they are truly unbearable, maybe changes in your treatment plan are needed, and your doctor is the best person with whom to share your concerns regarding your treatment plan.
Best wishes to you as you figure this out.1
