Current Controversies in Nutrition: Videos

Hi! I have stumbled upon a very informative series of videos created by leading health researchers, nutrition researchers, and MD's from California's State University System. They call it their "Mini Medical School". I thought I ought to share just in case any one else finds it useful.

Here are two of the videos I keep coming back to:

My favorite is presented by Dr. Robert Baron, UCSF Professor of Medicine, is an expert on obesity and related topics in nutrition and chronic disease. Here he explores ten things you thought you knew...and busts open A LOT of myths you hear perpetuated on MFP. This is a great video resource! I especially love two points he makes: fitness is more important than weight loss (though the two often go hand in hand) and that a lot of the deaths reported to be caused by being underweight are actually related to cigarettes! He also touches on the importance of macros, diet comparisons, the effects of rapid weight loss, and the effect of extreme calorie restriction.

This one, by Robert H. Lustig, MD, UCSF Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology, is bound to spark some heated debate. It's pretty famous. Within this lecture, Dr. Lustig explores the damage caused by sugary foods. He argues that fructose (too much) and fiber (not enough) appear to be cornerstones of the obesity epidemic through their effects on insulin.

Thanks for the great links. I have added the tv series to my favourites for further viewing. The one on sugary foods I intend to watch after walking over to get my coffee (black) and coming back with it to settle down for a bit. Much appreciated.

His "science" is in direct contradiction to what the World Health Organization, the FDA, and the European Food Safety Authority have concluded about sweeteners. He's making money off of people believing his false theory. I'm amazed by how many people will believe a single opinion over the thousands that conclude otherwise.
