Back/Shoulder Workout This AM...

I'm not sure if it was because it was Monday at 5:45 AM, but I could not get my heart rate elevated during my back/shoulder lifting session this morning. In an hour and 20 minutes, I burned 385 calories -- and that was with 5 minutes on the elliptical to warm up and a 10 minute walk at 3.8 mph. I felt like I was lifting at weights that pushed me... but I'm not sure, I just felt super BLAH during my workout.

Any pointers? Any recommendations for good back/shoulder workouts? Any advice at all would be much appreciated! :)

Seems like a decent burn for lifting. Since there isn't a way to track strength training calories, I am curious how you came up with that number?

But yes, we all have off days. I just fight through and live to fight another day.

Awe, okay. I wouldn't put to much emphasis on that number then.

We all have good days and bad days and mediocre days in the gym. I'd just chalk it up as a bad, or blah, day and move on.

are you trying to use a back/shoulder lifting program to raise your heartrate? you would be better off doing cardio for a heart rate activity and to burn calories. Otherwise you could try lifting lighter weight and a massive amount of reps, that might raise your heart rate.

that's pretty much a useless number.
Heart rate monitors aren't going to give you an accurate reading for something that isn't steady state- because you have such excessive spikes from the internal pressure of lifting- it's just going to throw it all off.

    So- don't rely on that.

Second point- some days- lifting is just like that. You can't PR every lift- and you can't feel like a rock star ever life- that's just a reality.

But success comes from showing up- and grinding through it regardless of what you FEEL like.

So congrats- that was a successful work out.

Heart rate? Concerned about getting it Elevated? For a back and shoulder workout?

Fairly certain that's not even a real thing.

The YouTube channel 'AthleanX' has good tips for all types of weight training. I've seen a couple good videos from them regarding shoulder and back workouts that you can watch to give you ideas.

Like others have said, it was just a bad day. Try getting more rest or eating more if this continues.
