Used my garmin this morning, along with Mapmywalk. Garmin gives 154 cals whilst Mapmywalk gives 274, no wonder I'm not losing weight ! I have been using the map app cals ! What would you use ? Thanks xx

I did a one mile walk outside at the other day at lunch. My Fitbit Charge HR showed the 20 minute walk as 199 calories. Charge HR has a continuous heart rate monitor. I also had the MapMyFitness app open and logged the walk with it. MapMyFitness showed the walk at 140 calories burned. Both have the profile setup where you enter weight, height, gender, etc. but MapMyFitness doesn't track heart rate unless you link a heart rate monitor to it. So my guess is MapMyFitness made a mid-range calculation based on my profile and the pace of my walk.

The most accurate is a chest strap heart rate monitor. I have the Polar H7 that I use with my exercise bike. I plan to test the walk again soon using the chest strap. I will log the walk separately on the 3 apps (Fitbit, MapMyFitness and Polar Beat.), then compare the results with Polar chest strap. I will let you know the results once I complete the test.

yep i agree to the above i have a heart rate monitor with chest strap - this i found is the most effective. however i never eat my exercise cals anyway as i do TDEE. i use it as a point of refrence

Both are just a guide but I'd opt for the lower calorie burn to be on the safe side.

    Runner's World has a formula: http://www.runnersworld.com/peak-performance/running-v-walking-how-many-calories-will-you-burn

I find it matches up pretty well with my HRM (Timex Ironman with chest-strap).
