I am a bit discouraged today. I put on an outfit that fit me a year ago and looked great. but now it is too tight. I checked and I have gained almost 20lb from a year ago. I have not done much different at all... feeling hopeless. what can I do different?

Cause you were eating in a surplus. Now you need start logging and weighing your foods again.0

Edit: 20 pound gain in a year is only an extra 200 calories per day. I could easily do that through little slips, errors, and forgets if I'm not logging.

As I tell my boyfriend when he puts the occasional pound or two back on "And Just think: you can lose that weight all over! The human body is magical like that.
"
It's not the end of the world, just pick up and start over again, I suppose. You've got this!

For me, not logging = instafat. I've proven to myself that I can't stay on track unless I'm using MFP religiously.0

So she should log for the rest of her life? That's crazy but I guess that's the only way to be certain you're not eating over allowed calories.

Some people have to.
I have logged for 5 years through losses and maintenance and only now am able to eat at maintenance and not log and not gain, which I am putting down to the fact I'm exercising loads through half marathon training!2 -
You could either weigh or wear that outfit a little more often, like once a month instead of once a year, to see if you need to adjust your eating. That way you can make adjustments after gaining only 5 pounds or so.
A very fit woman I work with has her "test outfit" (shorts and a top that aren't made of stretchy material). She says in the spring after being less active all winter, especially if the lack of snow has made for a short ski season, she tries on her outfit to see how much winter weight she has put on. I'll notice that she brings a noticeably lighter lunch to work for a few weeks.1
