Direct abdominal work doesn't flatten your belly and in fact, overtraining your abs can have the opposite effect of which you intend.
I don't do much in the way of direct ab work, but I like hanging leg raises.
I do a lot of compound lifting which works my core pretty good. I do a little direct ab work after my workouts if I'm so inclined and have time.0
