Fixed weight barbell vs Oly barbell

I find that when I overhead press using the fixed weight barbell I'm able to lift more than with an Oly barbell. For example with fixed weight barbell I can press 100# whereas with the Oly barbell 85# is my max. Is there any real difference or is it just psychological thing ?

Generally, fixed weight barbells are shorter. The weight on the ends are closer to your body, so you don't need to stabilize the bar as much. Many people find the same weight is much harder on a longer bar.

are you sure you are calculating the weights of these bars correctly?

That's a pretty significant difference. I'd weigh the loaded bars and see if they are actually accurate, I'm guessing they are not. Assuming your technique is the same in both case, anyway (grip width, ROM, etc).

Pretty sure the fixed bar weight is accurate.. It's stamped right on the side

@mirrim52 very good point..This could be the reason for my dilemma

You're accounting for the weight of the 22lb bar? If so then @mirrim52 s comment seems the most likely (but 15lbs seems like a pretty large difference).

How much weight are you including for the Oly barbell? They vary, but most I've seen are 45lbs for just the bar.

Of course your right: I don't know what I was thinking saying 22lb! Male Oly bar is 20kg = 45lb. Female is 15kg = 33lb. I've seen technique training bars which are 10kg - 22lb also.

some bars weigh more than 45, i come across 55 lb bars at gyms all the time . Go stand on the scale with the bar and find out how much it weighs.
