The cup is a unit of measurement for volume, used in cooking to measure liquids (fluid measurement) and bulk foods such as granulated sugar (dry measurement). It is principally used in the United States and Liberia where it is a legally defined unit of measurement. Actual cups used in a household in any country may differ from the cup size used for recipes; standard measuring cups, often calibrated in fluid measure and weights of usual dry ingredients as well as in cups, are available.
United States customary cup
United States customary cup is defined as half a U.S. pint.
1 U.S. customary cup = 1⁄16 U.S. customary gallon
= 1⁄4 U.S. customary quart
= 1⁄2 U.S. customary pint
= 8 U.S. customary fluid ounces
= 16 U.S. customary tablespoons[nb 1]
= 48 U.S. customary teaspoons
≡ 236.5882365 millilitres[nb 2]
≈ 152⁄3 international tablespoons
≈ 11.75 Australian tablespoons
≈ 0.833 imperial cups
≈ 8.33 imperial fluid ounces5 -
Depends where you live. A metric cup is 250ml, a US cup is approx. 236ml.0

I go by 250ml
I hate, hate, hate when I see recipes with cup and spoon measurements. I always try to convert to grams and ml, sometimes it works, other times the recipe turns out no where near right2 -
8 ounces0

If you use 250ml on a USA recipe - you are doomed0 -

I swapped cup and spoon for measuring with an American online friend since I'm in Australia. Makes it easy. I just have to keep them separate so I don't mix them with my metric ones.0

cup is 8 oz its a volume measurement
cup of water and cup of air popped popcorn are both the same
a cup of air and a cup of water are the same
1 cup=236.5 ml
https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=cups to metric
tablespoon =14.787ml safe to go to 15 ?
teaspoon =4.929 ml safe to go to 5 ?0 -

You got your answer to the cup question from all the great people above, but I would say weigh everything, don't just go by the suggested serving size in cups. If I get a 1/4 of a cup of cashews as a serving size like the package says (28g or 1/4 cup) it weighs differently everytime I fill it up, so always use the grams or ounce serving size, so you don't over or under eat.0

A silly uniy of measurment for something solid.0

One cup of cooked rice = ? Ozs
Some say 8 and some say 6
But with 8 oz of it I fill 2 cups of cooked rice !!!!!0 -
oz - can be used to measure weight or liquid (volume)
8 oz of water [liquid] does not weigh the same as 8 oz of butter [solid]
A cup is always referring to volume/liquid, not weight2 -
240 ml=8 ounces=1 cup0

Thank you puffbrat ، I got it now!0

Ikea does a measuring jug which has cups on it. I find it incredibly useful as some of my favourite recipes are from the US and aren't metric0

Thanks so much everyone. I especially like the idea of the measuring jug from Ikea #wotsitaddict. Thank you0
