I have a dilema , I went to my doctor around persistent lower left back pain.
I was asked to step on scales weighing in at 15 stone 6lbs ( 98.42KG ) he used a bmi calculator and advised me i'm classed are obese to morbidly obese because of how much weight I carry for my height ( 5ft 8 inches ) . he measured my body fat ( 19% ) and said that bmi is a blunt old tool it does not account for muscular mass but explained my back pain is most likely due to all the mass i carry uptop and my lower back muscles that stabalize me are not supporing me as they should.
he advised me not to get any heavier or bigger.. I love lifting and i don't want to stop.
do i trim some body fat and see if that helps ? or does anyone have any suggestions on back bain relief ? I have ibuprofen and also voltarol gel ..

Why don't you try physical therapy? They can probably direct you with some exercises to strengthen your lower back.1

I am not being critical here, but obviously to be so big you must be muscular and you, yourself say you carry a lot up top. when you lift and train were you doing full body or have you been more about upper body. I ask out of pure interest on some of the guys I see at the gym who have tiny legs and massive upper body and it makes me think how I want to train.0

Do you swim? I dont, but i heard its awesome for back injuries/treatment.0

Lifting isn't the problem, but are you also doing squats, dead lifts, rows with your lifts
(Pulling exercises)? Many people just do bench press, curls, etc, which build front muscles and rarely focus equally on the rear muscles that balance them out and help with posture and additional core support.2 -
I am rather large for my size in all honesty , I've avoided squats and deadlifts purely due to the pain as i assume it would worsen it ? my legs are roughly the same size as my upper body also. I do a lot of lat pull downs and other back building movements. I have done physical therapy and to be honest it hasn't helped.0

You need to go see some specialist about your back. Back to the GP for you and get referred. I notice you are just along the coast from me. You should be out enjoying the good weather0
