HRM accuracy - not calorie related

I've been trying out my new HRM the past few cardio sessions. At the gym, the Precor elliptical picks up my HR from the chest strap and it's roughly the same as what my watch shows. But at home, my Spirit elliptical (much cheaper!) picks up from the same chest strap, and it reads my HR as a good 30-45 bpm faster than the watch. I'm doing HIIT, and when I hit sprint time, my HR on the Spirit has been spiking to 90-95% of my max. A little higher than I'd like, and higher than I feel my HR actual is. It's well within my range according to the watch. Am I to assume the watch is correct?

Any reason you can't just compare to a quick wrist check? With that large of a difference it shouldn't be hard to figure out who's closer.0

I can. I'd just have to slow down during my sprint a few times to check. Which would be fine. I was hoping this was a common experience. But maybe my elliptical needs servicing.0
