Ideal body weight

I'm trying to figure out how to chose my goal weight. BMI has me in a range from 132-106 for my height and gender. (5'1" female). I chose 125 just to give me a little distance from th high end. What I don't know is whether or not that good enough. Should I chose higher/lower? How do you decide what the magic number is? Is being in the range good enough? ( I weighed in yesterday at 133.9. )

Thanks

I picked a weight I had been in the past, but when I got there decided I still had fat I wanted to lose.
Stop when you are comfortable and like what you see in tge mirror (unless you get to the low end and still don't like what you see...then I recommend stopping weightloss and switching to recomp).

It is really a matter of individual comfort.

What weight do you feel good at?

    What weight can you maintain?

And, besides BMI, many choose to target a body fat percentage, so they would watch that and then the weight falls where it falls.

You can always change it up once you are there too.

I believe it's based on personal preferences! I would make your initial goal the higher end of the healthy BMI range, and once you are getting close to that n umber, take a look at yourself and try to decide if you need to readjust that number! I started at 249 lbs. My weight loss goal is 149 lbs. I am currently 161 lbs and I feel that I might lose a little more to stay comfortably in the 140s once I'm there. I just feel that there is still room for improvement! Go off of how you feel.

I'm 5'1 also. I chose 112 because I saw on a couple different charts that it was optimal. I haven't that weight as an adult so I'll see when I get there if I like it or not. I think the range given has a lot to do with bone structure so if you have larger bones you would naturally sit at the higher end of the range. I'm on the small end of medium sized bones so I'm shooting for nearer to the lower end of the range. I'm 136.4 so we r really close in weight/height:) I'm going to friend request you:)

I am 5'1 also. 100-105 lbs has been my maintenance for a number of years.
It was also my weight for a number of decades before I gained.
I am small boned and apple shape and my weight suits me.

I am part of the petites maintenance group and all of us have a different maintenance weight that ranges from the top to the bottom of the BMI scale.

125 is a good goal to aim for. When you get there you can assess whether that is right for you. Take your calorie goal into consideration- you have to be able to eat enough to satisfy you. Take your lean mass into consideration- would 125 be a good weight but you need a bit less fat more muscle, add in some type of resistance work as you lose.
Does 125 satisfy the visual you- vanity I know, but most people like to like what they look like.

Only you can decide what is the right weight for you.

    Cheers, h.

This is a tough one. I also picked something down to give me some space from the high end of my BMI (5'3", CW 150, GW 135.) I got down to 135, but it put it back on from pregnancy. Once I hit the 135, I'll reassess. I know I'm happiest a bit lower, but I might achieve that same look with weight training, staying at a higher BMI. Id say your goal is good, and just consider reassessing later on.

Thanks for all the ideas. I do like the body fat % idea. I also read an article that said aiming for a BMI of 20-22 is good. If I chose 21, it would put me at 119. Not unreasonable.
I'm finding that I'm getting quite comfortable with the weight I'm at. I can parade in front of a mirror and feel pretty darn good. I'm wearing a small size top and a medium bottom. That makes me feel pretty awesome! I will probably stick with the long term goal of 125 and as advised, reassess once I've hit my goal!

    Thank you.

Im 5'6" and initally set 126 as my goal as this is what i was a year ago. Having got there im super happy but wont say no if i can get closer to 120 before my holiday to give me some leeway.
I'd set a goal for a weight you were previously then see how you feel and alter accordingly

On my first time around, I was 200lbs. A lot of resources I looked at at the time suggested that a 5'10" woman should aim to be about 150lbs. Except when I got to 150lbs, I was still really unhappy with what I saw.

I have a very tiny frame, so I assume that means that I would look better carrying less weight. So now the goal is 135lbs, but I'll be reevaluating if needed as I go :)

My family doctor told me that because I'm a shift worker I would never lose weight and that I should quit my job. I don't have much faith in a doctors advice until I find a new doctor.

I would pick a weight and go for it and see as you feel when you get closer. My goal when I was 212 was to get to 170, well 152lbs now and plan to drop 10lbs more give or take and focus on getting my body fat lower.

It is hard when we start out to pick a goal weight, so just take it 5lbs or 10lbs at a time and go with it.

Well I think its all based on how you feel and how your body looks at that weight. BMI is really general thats why the range is so large.
