Realizing what is needed

Just wanted to share an experience i had today.
I've recently lost a lot of weight and still have a small amount to go and i created a large deficit for quite some time but the last couple of weeks i ate a bit more excercised less and my weight has been about the same...I've been ok with that and i am going to get back to the calorie deficit tommorow but today was an eye opener.
I was at my kids friends party and there was an abundance of food to say the least. So anyways i consumed a lot of calories and probably gained half a pound today. But more importantly i concluded that people trying to lose weight at a decent rate or even maintain a certain weight cant really engage in this behaviour more than once a month....its just too devastating. Think about it. I mean i ate like 4000 calories today and i burn like 2200 a day when im sedetary. So that is literally half a pound of fat. And today i was sedetary i didnt work out...first time in a long time. So if i did this once a week i would have to burn an extra 300 calories the other 6 days or eat 300 calories less the rest of the week to undue it and maintain my current weight. So to actually lose weight while doing this type of once a week binging is freakin ridiculous. Not only did i binge the most disturbing part was that i ate 4000 calories and am still hungry! whereas when i ate like 2500 of good food a day i wasnt hungry at all. And it gets even worse the days i ate 2500 i excercised a lot and today i didnt at all! The empty calories and cravings these foods induce are just not worth it more than once a month in my opinion. For me i have to limit empty high calorie food to like no more than 100 or maximum 200 calories a day because the consequences are too severe. And its not so much that i lose all control its more like im uncomfortable and dislike the feeling of being hungry and craving more garbage.
I mean when i really calculated how easy it is to eat 600 calories and how hard it is to burn 600 calories i came up with a 30 to 1 ratio for myself. By that i mean i can eat in 2 minutes what it takes 60 min to burn off. When i really let that sink in i recognized the insanity of what i was doing. If i did something that was 30 times easier id have to do something 30 times harder to undue it just to break even. So when i realized this i changed hopefully forever and i think others can too.
The insidious nature of high calorie food and its availability is downright criminal. If society could see past the individuals right to eat scientifically designed high calorie food made to induce cravings in whatever quantities they want and recognize that this sort of food is in my opinion almost as bad as drugs then maybe something would be done to severely limit its availability.
This *kitten* is so crazy its gonna give me a stroke!

Yeah, I have those moments too, when i realise that the one icecream I ate last night was nearly 300 calories, plus 13 gms carbs.. and the 3 dark chocolate coated figs I ate the day before is about 350 calories and 20 grams carbs.. .. let alone the chemicals etc in these, and worse, after i eat them, I just want to eat potato chips- probably a childhood mental link - and that doing this undermines everything I am doing to live a rich joyful life.. It does make re register the insanity of it. And I don;t want that.

Yes exactly...it comletely undermines so many good things you do and intentions you have. I mean i can have a treat but i have to severely limit how often that happens. I used to see people that take their own foods to parties in tupperware containers and others who avoid high calorie anything while on vacation or out for dinner and think these people are freaking nuts when actually it was the other way around.
I just know what it takes now. Its a new lifestyle with ALMOST no cheating for the rest of my life. And thats fine because the rewards are limitless.

I could be wrong but the state of nutrition in the west is just so tragic. This *kitten* is so sad that I just feel so sorry for those still trapped in the clutches of poor nutrition..most probably dont know what they actually eat or the calories they consume. I mean i read somewhere that its like putting diesel in your gas tank....whether its a car or the human body it just doesnt work properly or at all.

You seriously want 'society' to mandate/regulate what a person can and can't eat? :/

Eyes on your own plate. You do you.

Yes! Now given that people here can't decide which foods are the devil and which ones aren't, who gets to decide which foods are allowed to be sold, and which one will soon be available in your friendly neighborhood back alley? Maybe our trusted elected officials will better understand science and nutrition than the average MFPer... *babysloth*

I was thinking the same thing. I eat chocolate, I eat ice cream. I drink beer. I eat potato chips. I lost 70 pounds and have maintained for 3 years eating all those evil foods.

It is all about moderation and self awareness. I know what my calorie limit is. I know what I earn from exercise and I will eat/drink anything I damn well please.

You seem to be a bit too obsessive about this OP. So much drama about eating some party food isn't healthy.

Did the icreacream and figs put you over your maintenance calories? If not, then there's nothing wrong. Moderation is key, really, so there's nothing wrong with working the foods that you enjoy into your daily goal, or saving up a few calories a day so that you can have more calories for the weekend.
And, what chemicals are in figs, icecream and chocolate? Water is a chemical.

First of all, it really isn't your concern what other people eat at a party. Eyes on your own plate. Also people with glass houses should not throw stones. You seem to have a lot opinions about health ,nutrition and fitness but yet are a beginner . maybe your just overly excited about your new lifestyle or maybe your over thinking all this stuff way too much. Don't worry about what others eat or how they look , its not your business. I'm sure many people could draw up a list of complaints about the things you do, say, eat , look like and so on. So it goes back to this- people with glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Yes i will no longer post my opinion too often. And i would not call myself a beginner

A beginner is usually someone who is new to the fitness and health scene. Usually beginners will get overly enthusiastic and often judgemental whereas someone who has decades invested would be more understanding and could care less what other people are doing. How you classify yourself is none of my concern, I have my eyes on my own plate. But I will let you know that it appears you still have a lot to learn .

You're free to post your opinion, just don't be surprised when people question it, or call you out for statements that are rather unorthodox in nature.

Um well the chance of you being arnolds mom is 1 in 7 billion but the chance of me having trained with olympic level athletes is not very low at all. Think about it. All the people in all the larger cities have lots of olympic athletes who at various points in their careers trained with hundreds or thousands of different people. All im saying i was one of them at one point in my life a long time ago. But thats fine if you dont believe me. And i know u arent arnies mom because unless shes texting me from the grave or a nursing home if shes alive i think its safe to assume thats not true.

I checked your diary and you ate 6 cupcakes and over 50 jelly beans. I am not judging you but I have been a lot of places where there are cupcakes and I don't see many people eating 6 in one sitting... and you can even eat a cupcake a day every day for a year and not gain weight so long as it's within your calorie goals. I indulge every day in ice cream and it still fits under 1500 calories (and usually under 1200)... you can do it every day. It's called moderation and people do it every day.

I have a range of food and chemical intolerances and allergies that both of those foods contain. My lips swelled up - one and a half days later, are still swollen - my GI tract is inflamed and gives me acid reflux and creates mucous I am coughing up, leading to a sore throat, and the sugar or something in them gives me night sweats which I do not have normally.

I agree that eating and living in a way that is sustainable is important, that we all deserve treats, that we should eat what we want, and and that if we don't go over maintenance weight we are not even doing any great damage to weight loss.

For me, eating those things is a lot of calories AND created a host of other problems which will take a few days to recover from, so for me, this is insanity - and I am compassionate toward myself and others who do things that are harming themselves in small or larger ways out of addictive kind of behaviour, rather than making choices that are self sustaining.

I am in no way averse to treats, just not ones that are damaging. I would prefer to eat like I love myself.

"Arnold is my father" does not mean "I am Arnold's mother." I know a science fiction time-traveling yarn where both statements turn out to be true, but otherwise, pretty much impossible.
And the odds of having Arnold be your father turn out to be better than you might expect, if your mother ever worked for him or knew him or spent time in his vicinity....It's not like your mom had to be Maria Shriver.

    Edited to fix grammar.

It's not unusual, and I hate to break it to you, but it's probably not all about what you ate (although you ate food that is not very satisfying for the calories).

When you resume eating at higher amounts after a prolonged calorie deficit, there's a rebound hunger effect that is very strong. Essentially our species evolved having periods of feast and periods of famine, and now your body wants to feast so it can store enough fat to weather the next famine. When you do go on maintenance, you'll probably be significantly hungrier compared to eating at a deficit, even though you will have more calories and will be eating more food.

A weird story, although I suppose that could be said for most of Heinlein's works.

You didn't mention any intolerance and adverse reactions in your first post, just remorse over eating calories. I do agree with cutting out certain foods that cause physical problems, of course as eating those is damaging. I disagree that eating food is 'addictive'... it's personal choice. I am recovering ED, so demonizing foods is frowned upon.

He really was a master of the short story form (not that I'm disparaging what he did in longer forms), and that one ("'All You Zombies--'" is the title, IIRC) is one of his better ones, I think, although "his better ones" is a fairly substantial list in my head.
