I weigh 15 stone 9lb and I enjoy running however I have been told it's bad for the knees at my weight would I lose just as,much on a bike and save my knees or????

Cycling doesn't usually burn as many calories per minute, but you can compensate by cycling longer or more frequently. Or by eating fewer calories.
If you decide to run, get good shoes at a runner's store, and follow a program like C25K.

Do what you love but also listen to your body. Nothing wrong with doing either one or including both exercises.1
