Feeling ligament or tendon move while squatting-no pain

Hello! I started the StrongLift 5x5 program at the beginning of last month. It's been going great, I'm going really slowly and not upping my weight every time since it was already pretty hard just starting out with the Olympic barbell at first (squats were probably the easiest). Anyway, I've had a right knee injury in the past so I pay a lot of attention to that but while squatting I can feel in my left knee either a ligament or tendon (I'm assuming maybe the IT band moving over the apex/head of my fibula, but I don't really know) move/pop to the side as I squat all the way down, each time. There's no pain at all during or after. It starts doing it after the first or second set then continues doing it for during each squat. I tried just doing a few squats with no weights today after my work out and it did it then too. I have my feet set about shoulder width and toes slightly pointed out and trying to squat past parallel. Is this something that's normal or am I doing something wrong?

Bumping for answers! Or if anyone can link me to a good bodybuilder/weight lifting group that might have better answers that would be awesome!

Certainly doesn't sound normal, but I don't have any answers for you. While you could possibly post a form check video, I'm not sure how bad form could cause the symptom you describe. If you have access to a competent physical therapist (preferably one who specializes in sports rehab), I'd recommend giving them a visit and demo the issue.

Try taking a wider stance and see if it still happens.

Thanks guys. If I see the pt around the gym I might ask him. I'm afraid to ask the PA I work for cause he always just tells me not to squat and stuff when I ask him something without giving me other viable work out options.

My suggestion is that you go see an orthopedic surgeon because you have some kind of issue with your knee. Things aren't normally supposed to move around in your knee.

I speak with experience as someone who has issues with my knee. Bone-on-bone arthritis, 2 scope surgeriesand no ACL, it totally deteriorated. Just for the hell of it I'll throw in a double hip replacement last February.

There are ways of working your legs but what you really need to do is talk to a sports orthopedic surgeon and physical therapist these guys know what they're doing I swear by them good luck

I just had tendon and ligament repair in my ankle because of this happening in my ankle. The tendon would dislocate and slip over and my ligaments would stretch. After years of enduring it and injuries it got to a point I would roll my ankle on flat ground and tear the ligaments. I'm three weeks post op and while squatting may never be a great thing for me I feel way more stable on the exercise bike (not able to run yet).
Definitely get it checked by an orthopedic dr. I had numerous old brakes on my fibula and tibia I never went on for because I always thought they were sprains from rolling the ankle.

I have the same thing! Only in my left leg. I never had a serious injury. It’s right below my knee on the lateral side of my lower leg. It does feel like a tendon moving over a bone but no pain. It is worse with sumo squats for me. I haven’t tried it yet but maybe these moves will help. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g5vOGrtHT9Y Starts at 1:50 tendon warmup. Let me know if anyone has any more information. Thank you!

I have the same thing only in my left knee as well. My trainers all say it’s just tightness and I need to stretch more. But I don’t know how to stretch that area. The ligament literally rolls over the side of my knee when I squat low. Every time. Did anyone find out what it was or how to help it?

Glad I'm not the only one! I havent always noticed this but in the past year I've been doing more squats and have felt this in my left leg. Also no pain. Turning my feet outwards a bit helps prevent it from happening but think I might go in to see a specialist too per peoples' suggestions.
