Just looked, Web md has it listed, L Carnitien its uses, doses, side effects etc. If you are generally healthy on an adequate diet your body should provide you with enough for your daily needs unless you have a genetic condition or other significant health issue.
Please don't use anything you don't need to or do not have a good reason to. If you are lacking in energy, look to your diet- are you trying a too strict reduction? Inability to loose weight and being lacking in energy on a sensible restriction for your age, hight, activity level and gender could indicate you need to be medically checked out before you consider anything more. A wonky thyroid will cause weight gain and lethargy. Try reading from "Stop the thyroid Madness" web site. It's particularly relivant to women - many symptoms are taken as "normal if you are femail" by most doctors, it covers symptoms, treatments, testing, its up to date and relevant.0 -
It is not an energy pill or weigh loss pills necessarily but it is something that does assist in certain aspects of workouts as it is synthesised in our body as well. Please seek the advise of a trained individual that can suggest an appropriate dosage or usage.0

Well, some forms of it enhance sperm quality, which is not likely what you are after.2

L-Carnitine can apparently help the transport of fatty acids into cells like muscles that is then burned to produce ATP. It's not a weight loss supplement but it can aid the burning of fat during intense workouts and supply the muscles with a source of ATP replenishment. L-Carnitine should be taken with some fast digesting carbs to aid the uptake of Carnitine into the muscles.0

Rarely Needed
Who might need carnitine supplements?
A preterm infant who cannot make enough carnitine may need to supplement with this compound. A rare genetic defect called primary carnitine deficiency may also require supplementation.
For everyone else, it’s best to give carnitine a wide berth. If you’re a fan of energy drinks, read the ingredients and avoid those that contain l-carnitine. The occasional steak won’t do you in, but you’re best off limiting your consumption of red meat to the occasional few bites.

L-Carnitine, aka ALCAR (Acetyl-L-Carnitine)
The Claim: L-Carnitine helps shuttle fats into your mitochondria (the “powerhouse” of a cell), where they get burned off.
The Reality: Another supplement which works in theory, but does not work in reality. Supplementation only works in burning fat if you are deficient (which is common only in very elderly people); taking more carnitine than your body needs results in no extra fat burning. This is likely due to your body’s regulatory facilities.0
