Hi everyone, I am not trying to take over the community board, but I have a lot of questions today :). Do any of you guys have experience with prenatal vitamins and its impact on weight loss or weight gain? My hubby and I want to try for a baby in the coming months and I was prescribed a prenatal vitamin today by my doctor and I read that it can impact weight loss (and I know losing weight while trying to get pregnant is counter productive by still). Thank you!

Your doctor knows better then some Google know it all.

My doctor confirmed that prenatal vitamins have no impact on weight loss, but I continued Googling this and came across the topic of weight gain and prenatal vitamins on different discussion forums (with no scientific basis).

pre-natal vitamins will not do anything +/- for weight. taking a PNV is very important for the health of your future child. FWIW, i was very thin and was trying to get pregnant and we had alot of fertility issues. i gained about 10 lbs and got pregnant. i just didn't have enough body fat to sustain a pregnancy. (this was YEARS ago, when i weighed about 110 lbs @ 5' 7")
i'm not saying that gaining weight = getting pregnant, but just be cautious about losing too much weight.

PS i have PCOS and endometriosis, as well as MTHFR gene mutation and "real" infertility issues. over the years, we "tried" for over 8 years and had 4 miscarriages. taking folate is KEY to a healthy pregnancy and baby. i caution you to not take FOLIC ACID, but instead research "real" folate and the types of B vitamins that are bioavailable.

You just explained why you should listen to your doctor and not random people on the internet. ;)

Then feel free to disregard. They are vitamins. There may be a small amount of calories invoked (maybe 10? Probably depends on the brand), but hardly enough to have any significant impact on weight gain/loss. Prenatals are a great way to provide "insurance" that you are getting everything you and your baby need to be healthy during pregnancy and lactation.

i think there could be a very good explanation for why someone believes weight gain occurs when taking PNV's.
think about this: woman wants to conceive so she starts taking PNV. after one month or two of trying, she becomes pregnant, but doesn't yet know it because it is very early in the pregnancy. she gains a couple of pounds just because of pregnancy hormones. so she equates PNV with weight gain.
