Got a buddy from the 70's riding in from Texas in three weeks. I'm in Portland. I'm taking 10 days off work and we are going to slap a couple sleeping bags on the back of our motorcycles and ride. With no destination in mind. Probably along the Pacific coast.

Head north, past Seattle, and take the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20 in Washington) east, across the mountains, then make a loop south. Here are some pics from the road.

The last weekend of July I'm riding to Ocean Shores, WA for the Hog Rally. Riding with about 10 other guys. Looking forward to it.

Dear God, no. Unless it involves a camper with a comfy King sized bed and an indoor bathroom with a shower. No way, no how :D

(I do love the great outdoors, and specifically the beach. I just want to sleep in comfort, not with bugs and dirt!)

I camp all the time, and never sleep with bugs or dirt. My husband and I have a 6-person tent we can stand up in, into which we put a queen-size aero bed with sheets, plush blankets and a sherpa comforter. And our suitcases. We sleep as well as - and sometimes better than -- at home.

Do you take your shoes off before entering the tent? Any dust/dirt blow into the tent? There's dirt in there.

We love camping, but I have to have my own bathroom & an A/C. We got a hybrid RV 13 years ago when my kids were little--4.5 years old, 1.5 years old, & newborn. I just couldn't handle a campground bathroom with them. We had one more kid since then & last year we took in a teenager. Last summer it was super crowded with all 7 of us crammed into the camper. This year I bought a big 10'x14' tent & I'm kicking 3 of the teens out to sleep in it.

I do make everyone take off their shoes when they come in & I also have a vacuum cleaner & swiffer that I make regular use of. My idea of camping is far from "roughing it", but I love to go & be outside in the woods.

Well seeing as how he is in ocean shores there are many beautiful places to hike in the Olympics. Like Charlia Lakes, Marmot Lakes, Enchanted Valley, Goathead Lakes. But if highway 20 is beautiful!

I don't mind a day out in nature, but if I'm going on vacation I want to be somewhere nicer than where I live. I don't understand the draw of camping honestly. Spending a shiit ton of money for gear to sleep outside and pretend you;re homeless.. Bring on the room service and hot tubs, just saying.

I was just coming to inquire about camping alone. Was thinking about starting out with just one night somewhere along the NorCal part of the Pacific Crest Trail. Any suggestions and/or stories?

Good gravy, provided camping alone doesn't end up like this...

@PurringMyrrh I can't click the link right now, but I've camped alone more often than I've camped with others. You mention camping on the PCT, so I imagine you are talking about back-country camping. That is going to be much different than front-country camping (i.e. car camping) and different than RV camping. If you haven't yet done something like that, I suggest checking with your local Sierra Club if they have some beginner backpacking classes. Sometimes I see REI stores have similar classes. There are a lot of things the right class will cover, including proper gear, treating water, cooking, LNT principles, sanitation (human waste), etc.

My wife and I love to camp - cold weather, warm weather, hot weather. As part time nudists, we'll take advantage at some of the nudist-friendly sites during the hot weather trips.
