Not many of the sushi places around my town have online nutritional facts which sucks. I love love LOVE SUSHI! Its fish so i love it more!

So does anyone know what sushi ingredients to avoid and which ones are healthy?

I love fried sushi as well!

But i usually get a crunchy or california roll and my fav fried roll is called the Johnny Be Good Roll from a local bar called HELLO SUSHI most of the time i dont dip it in soy sauce so no worries about the soy calories

Well, for one, tempura (fried) sushi is going to be higher in calories. The smaller maki rolls (Japanese style with the seaweed on the outside) will be lower in calories. This is a pretty good resource for calorie counting:

You can click the different tabs to view different types of sushi and sashimi, too.
  • I had this very question the other day and found this website beyond helpful!

Fried sushi?? Never heard of such a thing, but I'm guessing it's not on the "low-cal list"

California rolls are great. A little over 300 for about 12 pieces.
  • fried sushi is usually called Tempura....its simply divine! Down here in louisiana most local sushi bars have some rolls that include shrimp and CRAWFISH! Which i love! If you got some time down in Louisiana and get sushi...just get a Orleans roll! Usually kinda low cal if you get it without the sauce but its a crazy new way to enjoy crawfish!

Here are the cal's for the sushi packages sold in grocery stores. For absolutely lowest cals that would be the kapa/cucumber ones but avocado ones provide good fats and if you can get brown rice sushi for the nutrients, even better!

Sushi's biggest flaw is the sodium involved (which doesn't include any soy sauce you dip it in) so make sure to drink TONNES of water, avoid soy sauce unless its low-sodium and just don’t eat it all the time. Fried sushi will be bad for you but that’s life, everything in moderation.

I love cucumber and avocado rolls, even tried spinach but I find its impossible to fill me up so I almost never have it other than at Mandarin Buffet since its the only healthy thing there other than salad. They have spring roll sushi there, sweet potato and fruit sushi too!

Most things without tempura or cream cheese. And when it comes with the creamy sauce you have to try to pass on that as well.

I know of the tempura rolls (I'm from BR as well) and I love them too. But, unfortunately I haven't had one in ages. Anything deep fried... it's bad news. I might splurge on one for my birthday coming up, but ooh, lordy, i've stuck mostly to no fried stuff. I don't even have crunchy rolls because the shrimp in them is fried.

The crawfish rolls - yes, they are totally awesome. And they are also totally okay to have. If you look up the calories in plain old crawfish (and I definitely had to for a boil a month or so ago) they're not awful. It's a simple low-calorie shellfish. And all the crawfish rolls I've had are pretty basic - as in just crawfish and veg. No sauce even. It's one of the ones I always allow myself.

Some restaurants (like Ichiban) have a rice-paper roll. It's pretty much just veg, raw fish and that sticky paper. So it's super good for you - it cuts out all the carbs from the rice. Of course, it comes with that sauce you shouldn't have, lol.

While avoiding fried stuff has definitely limited which of my old sushi faves I can have - I've found that I REALLY love a lot of raw fish sushi more than I thought!

I love sushi! When I have it, I try not to have too much uh traditional? sushi ie the type with the rice... I'm not a low-carber or anything but you can pack a lot of rice into that tight space!

I usually go for a few pieces of actual sushi, maybe 4-5 pieces or 1 roll and then get sashimi, rice paper rolls or salad to go with it. Or some combination of that.
