Net calories over weekly goal?

There is a setting for this on my app. Does this mean that even if I go above my deficit a little bit for the week, as long as my net calories above my weekly goal is small (such as 500 or so) I am still losing weight, just at a slower pace?

The answer depends on what your daily deficit is. For example, if you set MFP to lose 0.5 lb./week, then your daily deficit is 250 calories, and your weekly deficit is 1750 calories. In that case, if you go 500 over for the week, you still have a weekly deficit of 1250 calories, and you should lose about 0.36 pounds (5.7 ounces).

That's basically how I approached my weight loss. I set an initial goal of 1.5 lb./week and was happy to lose a pound. After six months, I set it to 1 lb./week and was content with 0.5-0.75.

Thanks! Could you explain the math that came up with 0.36 please?

Since you need to have a deficit of 3500 calories to lose 1 lbs and in bwog's example the actual weekly deficit was 1250 calories, 1250/3500 = 0.36 lbs.
