Anyone have experience working with a weight loss specialist?

About a week ago my Obstetrician diagnosed me with PCOS, and told me I'd have to lose 50 lbs before even starting to think about having kids. (I'm 27, 5'4", and at the time was 250 lbs). Since then, I've started eating healthier and picked up a very physical second job. In that week I've lost about 4 lbs. I was eating 1300 calories, but because I don't want to lose fast, I upped it to 1550.

My Obstetrician has gave me a referral to a weight loss specialist, so I am able to set an appointment with them at any point here. But.... I'm kind of hesitant about it. I have failed at weight loss several times in the past, because while I have wanted to lose weight, I didn't care about it TOO much. Despite my weight, I have a positive self-image and self-esteem, and have actually lead a fairly active lifestyle and was seemingly in fairly good health. Most of my motivation for losing weight was because I wanted more opportunities to shop for cute clothes. haha. But now that my fiance and I really want to have kids, I have a very real motivation to lose weight this time around.

I genuinely think I'll stick to it, and so part of me just kind of wants to keep doing it on my own.

However, I know that I really should take the opportunity to work with a weight loss specialist since it's an option now, and my insurance will cover it. I'm just so worried that they're going to put my on a really restrictive diet, and any foods that I eat that are "bad" I'll have to cut out completely, even though I have started eating them in moderation and adding a LOT more nutritional foods to my diet.

Has anyone had any experiences working with a doctor on their weight loss? What were your results, and would you recommend it? What I want to do and what I think I should do are conflicting right now, and I think hearing the experiences or opinions of others would help.
